Hotel San Guido

Stazione Garibaldi
We both liked this hotel. Italian hotels can be variable and hotel near stations especially so. However the San Guido was fine. We received a friendly welcome from the person on reception and were pleasantly surprised by our room, which was quite spacious, with a separate hall and a large bathroom. The furniture and fittings were charmingly old fashioned. My wife was particularly taken with the light fittings on the landing. A tram line runs in front of the hotel and you could hear the trams rumbling by but it wasn’t loud enough to be disturbing. Breakfast was included and it was fine. We had a problem finding the hotel when walking from the nearby station. Google recommended leaving by a side door and walking through a car park. However, even if we could have found that exit, it didn’t seem a wise route to choose in the dark. We left by the main entrance and it took a while for Siri to figure out our best route to the hotel. The good news is we found a row of nearby restaurants where we later ate dinner.

Milan City Centre
I’d give it a five if check in was easier. Room is spacious - it looks over the entrance of the metro station so there is some noise from trams, traffic and a nearby hospital. But the room itself is spacious, clean, plenty of hot water and the price was right. Check in was difficult, partly because my phone company had not given my phone international access as we’d requested a week earlier so i could not coordinate access with their agent and early check in is not available. If you are not jetlagged and have a working cell phone I’m sure check in is significantly easier. Also, a warning for anyone taking the express train from the airport - you have to validate your train ticket or a 12 euro train ride becomes a 62 euro trip with fines.

Barona
A more laid-back hotel is located in a small park, quiet and comfortable, suitable for holiday travel, and the location is a bit in the outer ring. If you are shopping or traveling on business, it is better to choose the city.

Niguarda - Parco Nord
Wouldn’t advise anyone to stay here, the reason I’d rate it 2 stars rather than 1 is that the downstairs lobby has recently been renovated and looks nice, while the reception staff are friendly enough. But, once you’re up at the rooms, there’s an awful smell of stale cigarette smoke, the beds are uncomfortable with just one small thin pillow each, barely enough to raise your head up. Walls are paper thin and loud noises all night, almost impossible to sleep. Couldn’t get the Wifi or Aircon working, room was far too hot (in March, with the window open). Bar advertised throughout the hotel but this had previously shut down and signage not updated. Was advised to use bar in another hotel. Positives - Friendly reception staff, room was clean (albeit dated and in need of renovation) & location was good. Just beside tram & metro stop. It’s the quality Id expect from a 2 star hostel, with a higher pricepoint.

Hotel has a 24-hour reception, located not far away from the city centre and has a good transport connection (teams are very close)! You can clearly see that the hotel is new and everything in the rooms was not used yet, it was a good little surprise. The room was clean and fresh, and the towels were changed the next day (what I didn’t expect too tbh). There is a small classic Italian lift in the building if needed. Just in case you travel with vacuum plastic bags for your clothes and you need a vacuum cleaner - the hotel as many in Italy (as I understood later) doesn’t have it since the floor is tile and it’s not needed. And also it was a best price in the city :)
