|Perched in the midst of the medieval grandeur of Khan El-Khalili bazaar. ✓ I've almost visited all the large mosques in Cairo, and so far, the only one I feel deserves the title 'understated yet magnificent' is this building. ✓ A medieval superstructure that simultaneously houses a mosque, school, inn, market, and mausoleum among other facilities. Monument: Mosque-Madrassa of Al Ghouri Era: 1504 Address: Sharia Al Muizz Din Allah, Cairo Opening hours: 9:00～17:00 (The mausoleum is currently not open) Admission: Free Highlights: Late Mamluk Dynasty (1250-1390) style A mixed complex of worship place, theological school, inn, mausoleum, and market 【Persian iwan】Four elevated arch-shaped Persian iwans enclose a beautifully intricate courtyard. 【Sunken Courtyard】The sunken courtyard features bubble-shaped mosaic tiles, seemingly small but quite full. 【Ablaq Style】The alternating colored stone masonry technique, a typical Mamluk Dynasty style, is quite evident. 【High Privacy】Lavishly and intricately decorated, with gold-plated floral wooden inlays and sophisticated use of black and white marble. 【Al-Ghouri Ghouri】The penultimate Sultan of the Mamluk Dynasty, who in 1504 commissioned the construction of his own mausoleum and the attached mosque, including a theological school and a caravanserai. He was beheaded in Syria at the age of 78. The actual person buried in the mausoleum, however, was his successor Tumanbey. Unfortunately, this unlucky successor was hanged by the Turks in 1517.
