The Suhua Highway connecting Yilan County and Hualien County is 118 kilometers long. This road is famous for its construction along the fault coast. During the Qing Dynasty, in order to consolidate the border defense and appease the aborigines in the eastern part of the country, the court sent local officials along the cliffs of the sea to create a small intestine path from Suao to Wu Quancheng (now Hualien Zhixue), called the North Road. During the Japanese colonial rule, in order to improve the traffic between Yilan and Hualien, on the basis of the Qing dynasty, it took 14 years to expand the road and was completed and opened to traffic in 1932, which was called the seaside road. In the process of expansion, many new tunnels were built. Due to the limited technical conditions of the year, the tunnel was almost manually excavated, which was very difficult. Today, many monuments can be seen on both sides of the Suhua Highway. Many of them are road construction workers who commemorated the loss of their jobs here. The tunnel that was excavated in the past is now abandoned. However, if you walk in and look at the traces of the surrounding excavation, you will understand the difficulty of building this coastal cliff tunnel and cherish the good life of today.
