The elegant Jianshui Zhu Family Garden

The Jianshui Zhu Family Garden, a residence and ancestral hall built by the Zhu brothers, local gentry of the late Qing Dynasty, covers more than 20,000 square meters. It is said to have been built according to the layout of the Grand View Garden in 'Dream of the Red Chamber'. The interior is dazzling, with four core rooms named after chrysanthemums, plums, bamboo, and orchids. The steep ridges and flying eaves, carved beams and painted buildings, scriptures, paintings, poetry, calligraphy, and Zhu family teachings are all embedded in it. It is both luxurious and elegant, and does not lose the scholarly elegance. Appearing in the small town of Jianshui, it can indeed be called a wonder.

Zhu Family Garden
With a history of more than 1200 years, Jianshui is an ancient town in Yunnan province that’s abundant in culture and heritage. The whole area is filled with ancient buildings and historical architecture that gives it character and a vibrancy that’s doesn’t fail to impress. ⠀ ⠀ While here, pay a visit to Zhu’s Family Garden. An architectural complex that simply oozes elegance. With over 100 years of family history, the Zhu Family Garden is an incredible place to wander through, but can often feel like a bit of a maze. It took 30 years to complete, and the entire garden covers an incredible 20,000 square meters. With 42 different courtyards to explore, you could easily spend half a day here just exploring all the different nooks and crannies, and pretending (or wishing) that you owned a garden as elaborate as this one.⠀ ⠀ Jianshui is also renowned for its tofu. An astonishing fact that we learned during our trip was that the local community still use fresh water collected from ancient wells scattered throughout the village. The water from each of these wells is used for different things, for example soaking the soybeans in preparation for making tofu!⠀ ⠀ Just next to an old well, Ximen Daban, is the Da Ban Jin (大板井) tofu factory. Inside, we saw a group of ladies forming tight little squares of freshly made tofu - using just their hands and a small cheese cloth - at lightening speed. Steaming buckets of freshly made beancurd are in constant rotation, and the sweet smell of steamed soy bean lingers in the air.⠀ ⠀ Once all packaged up, these tofu squares are shipped off to different restaurants where, to serve, these squares are left to dry a little bit before being grilled to perfection.⠀ ⠀ 📍Zhu Family Garden, Jianshui, Yunnan Province 📍 Da Ban Jin (大板井) Tofu Factory, Jianshui, Yunnan Province, China. 📍Jianshui, Yunnan, China⠀ #urbanexplorer#qingmingtravel
