Dongshi Ancient Village

Dongshi Ancient Village is located on the north bank of Dongshi Harbor, formerly known as "Shejia Village," and was the residence of the chieftain of the She ethnic group who migrated south during the Jianwu era (25—27) of Emperor Wu of Han. During the chaos of the Five Barbarians, Lin Kaibi, a secretary from Luoyang, Henan, fled the war with a group of his people, traveling south along the water route and settling to the east of the village, hence the name "Dongshi" originated, and "Shejia Village" was then renamed "Dongshi Village." In the first year of the Sui dynasty's Kaihuang era (581), Emperor Wen of Sui sent envoys to develop Taiwan and stationed troops there. The 'Xishan Miscellany' refers to this as the beginning of the Quannan garrison. It was known as a 'key fortress on the river'. At the end of the Ming dynasty, the national hero Zheng Chenggong, in order to resist the Qing and restore Taiwan, took advantage of Dongshi Village's favorable military position. He set up camp here, using the ancient village as a base for military training and gathering provisions, hence the village was also called 'Zhenggong Village' at that time. In the twelfth year of Shunzhi, the Qing army pressed the borders, and the battle was very fierce. To inspire his soldiers, Zheng Chenggong personally wrote the words 'Danxin' and had them carved on a huge rock, which is the origin of the later 'Danxin Stone' in Dongshi. It also became the symbol of Dongshi Town. Ascending Dongshi Ancient Village, one can gaze across to Kinmen, the spectacular seascape, with the gentle sea breeze accompanied by the faint scent of sandalwood, refreshing the spirit. The old smoke of gunpowder and the flames of war have gone with the wind, and everything today is so harmonious and peaceful.
