Senado Square, or Largo do Senado, stands as the dynamic cultural and civic heart of the Macau Peninsula. Historically, this 3,700-square-meter urban plaza served as the seat of the Portuguese government in Macau, deriving its name from the Leal Senado (Loyal Senate) building erected in 1784. For centuries, it acted as a major administrative venue for official military inspections and grand celebrations, seamlessly blending Western and Eastern cultures. In 2005, it earned a spot on the UNESCO World Heritage list as part of the Historic Centre of Macau. Today, this vibrant, pedestrian-only zone is universally recognized for its iconic wave-patterned Portuguese cobblestone pavement (calçada portuguesa) that reflects its rich maritime history, and the surrounding pastel-colored neo-classical architecture, including the beautiful Holy House of Mercy and St. Dominic’s Church. Geographically, the square enjoys a prime, central location in Sé on the main Macau Peninsula, acting as an elongated triangle connecting the bustling main thoroughfare of Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro (known locally as San Ma Lo) with Largo do São Domingos.
