Shanghai Millennium Ancient Temple - Longhua Temple

Longhua Temple is one of the oldest temples in Shanghai, said to have been built during the Three Kingdoms period. The name of Longhua Temple also has its origins, derived from the story of Maitreya Bodhisattva becoming a Buddha under the Dragon Flower tree in the Buddhist scriptures. Longhua Temple covers an area of more than 20,000 square meters, with a scale not to be underestimated. The temple is characterized by its flying eaves and melodious bells, with tall and exquisite Buddha statues that are majestic. The central axis of the temple is 194 meters long, following the seven-hall system of the Song Dynasty. Unlike other temples, the first hall of Longhua Temple is the Maitreya Hall, with a plaque reading 'Continuing the Great Hero' hanging on the rear eave. Longhua Pagoda is the only millennium-old pagoda in the center of Shanghai, undoubtedly a landmark building in Longhua area and Shanghai. The pagoda is about 41 meters high, with eight sides and seven levels, converging upwards, with flying eaves and a golden vase on top, which was once the commanding height of the Longhua area. The 'Hua' in Longhua Temple implies official luck. Praying for academic success and fame at Longhua Temple is quite effective. In addition to praying for blessings, many people come specifically for the Longhua vegetarian food, which was honored as 'Shanghai Intangible Cultural Heritage' in 2020.
