Why is the West Lake in Yangzhou called Slender West Lake? Is it a bit slimmer than the West Lake in Hangzhou?

Yangzhou's Slender West Lake was originally called Baozhang Lake or Paoshan River, and because this lake is located to the west of Yangzhou city, it is also called West Lake. Yangzhou is situated at the junction of the Yangtze River and the Grand Canal from Beijing to Hangzhou, with a very advantageous geographical location. It has been a land of wealth since ancient times. Yangzhou was built very early, and it has been prosperous since the Han Dynasty until the Qing Dynasty, happily known by people as 'the place to be in the flourishing March Yangzhou'. In fact, Slender West Lake is not really a lake; it is the moat or the remnants of the moat that was built during the Tang and Song dynasties for the Tangluo City and the Song Dynasty's great city. The moat is connected to the Grand Canal from Beijing to Hangzhou, and it is a tributary of the Grand Canal, which is a network of crisscrossing rivers. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, wealthy merchants, especially the salt industry tycoons, to create a business atmosphere and improve their living environment, took the initiative to fund the construction of many scenic buildings and create numerous garden landscapes and beautiful scenes along the banks of the moat. Gradually, it became a sightseeing wetland park with small bridges over flowing water, pavilions, lush greenery, birdsong, and fragrant flowers, with many historical relics and a strong cultural atmosphere. By the Kangxi and Qianlong periods of the Qing Dynasty, the lake had been beautifully constructed and became a leading garden, a beautiful scenic spot. During the Qianlong Emperor's reign, a poet from Hangzhou, Zhejiang, named Wang Hang, heard that there was also a West Lake in Yangzhou, Jiangsu. He made the arduous trip to Yangzhou and after admiring the beauty of Yangzhou's West Lake, he felt that it was very similar to his hometown's West Lake, only a bit smaller, or in other words, a bit 'slimmer'. Thus, he wrote a poem: 'Willows hang down to meet the remnants of the wild, the goose-toothed rainbow bridge looks like a painted picture. It's also a pot of melting gold, so it should be called Slender West Lake.' That's the origin of the name Slender West Lake. He felt that Yangzhou's West Lake, compared to Hangzhou's West Lake, was smaller in size, but the beauty was almost the same. From then on, the name Slender West Lake started to be used. Compared to Hangzhou's West Lake, it's like the difference between a fat person and a thin person. Slender West Lake emphasizes slenderness, a kind of sweet beauty and expression of leanness, that light and graceful charm. Hangzhou's West Lake is like a plump and beautiful matron, while Slender West Lake is like a slender and pretty young lady.
