#Naoshima Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
Must go Chichu Museum- Naoshima
The Chichu Museum is in the southern part of Naoshima Island in Japan’s Kagawa Prefecture. It was designed by acclaimed architect Tadao Ando and opened to the public in 2004. The museum faces the Seto Inland Sea and was built mainly underground - as per the name in Japanese- to avoid conflict with the natural environment of the valley.
It is a contemporary art museum and exhibits works of art by Claude Monet, James Turrel, and Walter de Maria, and definitely a must visit museum for any art lovers.
To reach the museum, you can take the #2 bus from Miyanoura in Naoshima, and get off at the last stop- Tsutsuji-so. Then take the free shuttle from the same spot provided by the Benesse House . The bus ride to the museum is about 10 minutes.
Tickets should be bought online in advance, as the museum follows strict guidelines for entrance.
There is also a cafe inside the museum which serves simple lunch sets such as sandwiches, salad and soup. The sea view at the cafe is also amazing.

Outdoor Art Space - Lee Ufan Museum- Naoshima
The Lee Ufan Museum is a collaboration between the famous artist Lee Ufan and architect Tadao Ando. It is located in a valley between ocean and hill on Naoshima island.
The museum is in a tranquil open space facing the sea which is a perfect space to enjoy art and spend time relaxing.
To get there, you can take the #2 bus from Miyanoura port, and get off at the last stop - Tsutsuji-so (¥100). Then wait for the free Benesse House shuttle bus which takes you to the Chichu Museum, stopping at the Lee Ufan Museum. It is a very short ride. Alternatively you can make the first visit at the Chichu museum, then walk downhill for 3 minutes to the Lee Ufan Museum. Walking to the museum is also possible from the Tsutsuji- so bus stop. It will be take about 20 minutes uphill but it gets quite hot in the summer as there is no shade. #naoshima

In search for the red and yellow pumpkins- Naoshima
Kusama’s pumpkins can be seen in many places these days, but definitely two very famous ones are placed in Naoshima.
These two pumpkins are displayed in different places on the island - the red is next to the pier in Miyanoura. You will not miss it as it is visible while you are still on the ferry. The yellow one- on the other hand- is next to the beach! To get there, you will need to take the number 2 bus (¥100) for about 15 minutes, and get off at the last stop. The bus stop is next to a small beach- look to the
Right end of the beach and you will find the yellow pumpkin. It will be 4-5 minutes to walk there.
You can also walk a little further uphill to see more outdoor works of art on display.

Visit in time : Hiroshi Sugomoto Gallery- Naoshima
There is so much to see on Naoshima and we particularly liked the Hiroshi Sugimoto Gallery: Time Corridors.
The museum is at the foot of the hill from the Benesse House museums. If you choose to walk downhill from the Benease House , then you will definitely find it as there are clear signs on the road.
This museum has art work indoor and in the outdoor exhibition space. It is best to stroll quietly and be lost in time as you emerge yourself in the work of man and nature. The ticket even included a Japanese tea+ dessert to be enjoyed in one of the tea rooms.

Art Walk- Honmura in Naoshima
Art lovers visiting Naoshima in the Seto Sea area should definitely make a stop at Honmura Village.
Honmura is a village in Naoshima Island. After arriving to the island at Miyanoura, take the #2 bus next to the tourist center ( right in front of the pier), and it is the second stop which takes about 10 minutes. Bus fare is only ¥100.
Aside from The Art Project, there are also lots of interesting work to see . Take your time to walk around and maybe even have an ice- cream like me.

Naoshima brimming with art.
You can get to Naoshima by ferry! The island is in Kagawa Prefecture, but this time I accessed it from Uno Port in Okayama Prefecture☺️ It takes 20 minutes to arrive🚢 Upon arrival on the island, you're immediately greeted by the famous pumpkin sculpture by Yayoi Kusama!🎃 As you walk around the town, you'll find it overflowing with various art pieces, making the stroll truly enjoyable!! Since I wanted to move around and enjoy the atmosphere of the town within the limited time, I went around on a rental bicycle🚲 Being in Kagawa Prefecture, the udon was of course delicious! There are stylish cafes and desserts everywhere, so it was a joy to look at and delicious to eat, making me truly feel it's a wonderful island☺️ The museums are a must-see with exhibitions that stimulate all five senses. This time, I stayed in Okayama for a day trip to Naoshima, but it was such a lovely place that I really wished I could have stayed overnight!
Naoshima Art Island - beyond spectacular
I can’t rave enough about how fabulous and serene Naoshima - the main “art island” off the south east coast of Japan - is. I just spent a little over 24 hours there and saw so much incredible art and design - by some of Japan’s most famous contemporary art and design legends (including Yayoi Kusama and Takao Ando) as well as some huge international big hitters (including FOUR pieces by James Turrell). I went in the off season (early February) which was awesome for less crowds but you still need to reserve a few of the galleries in advance, they will sell out for the day even in winter!!! I recommend staying at least one night but if I had my time over I would have stayed 2 nights so it didn’t feel so rushed. I will 100% be returning to Naoshima again just to be there for a few days and soak it all in. This is food for your soul.#art #naoshima #Japan
It's a place that calms the mind
Naoshima is a small island in Shikoku, Japan, with a population of less than 4,000. It is located north of Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, near Tamano City. It is a main venue of the Setouchi Triennale, with multiple museums and home projects, as well as famous artworks such as Yayoi Kusama's Red Pumpkin and Soichiro Fujimoto's Naoshima Violin.
The Benesse Corporation on Naoshima hosts the 'Benesse Art Site Naoshima' art event. It is often said that Naoshima is the island of architect Tadao Ando, and this area is full of his buildings that carry the diverse characters of artists.

Summer Naoshima ~ hug small fresh pumpkin
Unfortunately, two days before going to Naoshima, the closure of the art museum on all the islands in the Seto Inland Sea began! Therefore, our Seto Inland Sea trip is destined to bid farewell to the art gallery!
Take a boat from Uno Port to Naoshima for only 20 minutes. This time, because of a Japanese friend, we chose to rent a car! Naoshima is not really big, renting a car for two days around the island! However, if you choose a bicycle, the mountain road that goes uphill and downhill is still very specific. It is recommended that friends who don't rent a car choose a bus!
Transportation: Going to Naoshima can choose to depart from Uno Port, or you can choose Takamatsu Port. The traffic on Naoshima can choose buses, the main attractions will come!
Photos and Tips: Naoshima is not big, one day is full, the main attractions are the Mediterranean Art Museum, Red Pumpkin, Yellow Pumpkin! Everyone can wear a flowing gauze dress, and the photo will be especially good! Try to choose brightly colored clothing to match the blue sky and the sea!
Recently, Takamatsu came to enjoy the flowers in the spring. You must go to Naoshima to make a card. You can reach the most literary island in the Seto Inland Sea by taking a 50-minute boat ride from Takamatsu Port! The island is full of works by many Japanese masters of art. Here are some of the "straight islands must be hit" that some gorgeous teachers like very much:
1 Port Red Pumpkin: Yayoi Kusama can be recognized at a glance The red pumpkin, like a painter's hat, is buckled on the lawn next to the port. You can see it from Takamatsu by boat. This red pumpkin has also been on the cover of the last Seto International Festival guide!
2 Naoshima Violin: The small public art installation in the port of Naoshima, the work of the architect Fujimoto Zumuke, although the shape is completely unrecognizable to the violin... When the sun is good, the sky is super beautiful from the inside! After lighting at night, it shines like a diamond~
3 The Art Museum of the Earth: "The Qingshui Concrete Poet" Ando Tadao, the art gallery is perfectly embedded in the underground, and the aerial view can only see several geometric shapes. Into the light port, different time of light coming in and playing on the artwork can bring different visual impact effects. The most worthy collection inside is Monet's painting. Outside the art museum, a Monet water lily realistic version of the lotus pond is built~~
4 Zhidao Qiantang: a bathhouse with a very playful and exotic style. Passing by will definitely be attracted! This is the art work of Dazhu Shenlang. It combines a wonderful artistic sense to create a grotesque art world. Soaking a soup is the taste of art!
5 "Home Plan": Old House Renovation Plan, Straight Island Many Young
In Naoshima, all day long, good weather, return to Miyaura Port to meet the sunset and red pumpkins. The net-shaped straight island should be better if it lights up.
Finally, it is time to go straight to the direct island of the money soup I soup, a lot of people, the last time no one should cherish ~ rushed by boat, found that the door did not shoot all ~ finally put Naoshima Brushed up~ In fact, this is the second time I came to Naoshima, and then there is a third time, and I stayed longer and longer~
In the village area of Naoshima, there are seven reconstructed buildings in this film called the home plan. For the first time, I knew that Dazhu Shenlang was because of I [Love] soup. This time, I was also very fun. There was a two-story building in the room with the Statue of Liberty. I saw the moment of "Wow". It is like the What is the data model? I was so moved that I bought the introductory book "The layman can understand it". The curtains are different from other photos. It is probably the autumn version.
Figure 6 is another home plan, with wooden flowers in the tatami room, the staff said that each one will be completed in a few weeks. There are also two small black houses that are too low-key to actually shoot.
Figure 8 Udon noodle shop, followed by four years ago when I came here, I dont know the position at all, thinking that I cant remember the name of the store, but I just met it so casually.
The Setouchi Art Festival is a direct tour of the island, Benessee House is close to the Beach and Park. The large lawn has many pleasing sculptures, and this is the real place to revisit.
Of course, there is a big pumpkin in Yayoi! It is beautiful whenever you take a variety of weather. Its quite a good time to come to Halloween~ There are so many people waiting to take pictures in front of the pumpkin, just like that is Mickey Mouse.
Two red and yellow pumpkins on Naoshima are works of Yayoi Kusama, especially the yellow pumpkin is represented by the image of Naoshima. The bus on the island also painted the pumpkin. The red pumpkin can be seen, just beside the dock at Gongpu Port. The violin is also not far from there, it is said that the violin actually cuts it more like a diamond, as it was played in the scorching sun for a long time. There are a lot of interesting sculptures on this island, all of them are admired and always crowded by tourists for taking pictures. Naoshima is one of the most picturesque islands in the Seto Inland Sea. In the four countries where rare foreigners can be seen, there are many European tourists who have come to see the buildings of Tadao Ando on Straight Island. Love. In general, this is a place for literary youth to go to pilgrimage. But if it is a parent-child tour, it might get boring here. Ando Tadao's extraordinarily designed building is not easy to understand, but I like this place very much.
Speaking of Takamatsu, the first reaction is Shodoshima, Naoshima, oh, I am going to take you to Naoshima today, this long-grained island, Naoyas Kusama Yayoi pumpkin, and Tadao Andos art. Pavilion.
Two polka-dot pumpkins of Yayoi Kusama: The yellow squash was born in 1994 and grew on the abandoned pier in the Benesse area of Naoshima, overlooking Takamatsu City on the other side; the red squash was born in 2006. Growing up at the gate of Gongpu Port, as an upgraded version of the yellow squash, the red squash has dug up the fruit husk, and some of the polka dots are open. People can freely enter and exit the pumpkin shell between the light and shadow. It is interactive. Superb public art.
I have been planting the sacred art museum of Tadao Ando, and today I finally wished that this "art museum that grew from the ground", Tadao Ando was called "Clearwater Concrete Poet", and the museum was almost hidden underground. The ultimate, using only the most plain concrete, but beautifully suffocating. Because the museum can't take pictures, all the good things can only be remembered in my heart.
Naoshima Violin is another amazing diamond-like device on Miyaura Port. From a distance, it looks like a translucent diamond, and a piece of triangular pure white perforated metal plate is spliced together, like The paper that has been folded over in an origami piece, in the sunny weather, the whole piece of equipment looks as light as an origami because it penetrates the sun.
