Budapest, Hungary's capital, is on the Danube. The city is Hungary's political, administrative, industrial and commercial center. Since prehistoric times, the site has been continuously settled and now has a fifth of the population of the country. Its 19th-century chain bridge connects the hilly Buda district to the flat Pace. The cable car runs along Castle Hill to the old town of Buda, where the Budapest History Museum traces the city life since Roman times.
