The square is located in the center of Milan and is named after the famous Scala Opera on its northwest side. At the center of the square is the monument to da Vinci, also known as da Vinci square, which is erected by the sculptor Petro Mani. The south-east side of the square is the facade of the Marino Palace, Milan's City Hall, the north-east side is the Italian Commercial Bank Palace, and the south-west side has the entrance to the Emmanuele II arcade and the Palace of Beltrami. Most of the buildings on the square are built by architect Luca Beltrami.
