兴凯湖位于鸡西密山市境内，地处密山市东南40公里的中俄边境上，是中国东北地区最大的淡水湖，是古代火山爆发后，因地势陷落积水而形成的内湖。“兴凯”是满语，意思是水从高处流向低陷的地方。现在我国境内占三分之一的水域，其余都在俄罗斯境内，整个湖略呈椭圆形，共有九条河流注入，湖水从东北方溢出，最后流入乌苏里江。兴凯湖北面有一座小兴凯湖，整座湖全在中国境内，大小兴凯湖间有约宽1公里的沙坝，水涨时则相连为一。兴凯湖风景名胜区除大小兴凯湖外，还包括湿地公园、当壁镇、莲花、新开流、泄洪闸、龙王庙、蜂蜜山、金沙滩等景区。当壁镇位于兴凯湖最西端，这里有世界上最小的界桥“白棱河桥”，游客可以在湖边沙滩戏水或晒太阳，当壁镇东北侧，有个白泡子乡也临着兴凯湖，这里的湖畔景色更为原汁原味。
