West Lake

4.7/5

West Lake is undoubtedly the epitome of Hangzhou's beauty. The famous "Ten scenes of West Lake" surround its shores, where nature and culture complement each other, forming the core area of Hangzhou tourism. You don't need to visit every attraction - instead, spend half a day or a full day strolling along the lake. However you choose to enjoy it, the experience will surely lift your spirits. West Lake is the core attraction of Hangzhou, surrounded by clouds and mountains on three sides and the city on one side. The Su Causeway and Bai Causeway stretch across the lake, dividing it into several water areas. The lakeside scenery is highlighted by the "Ten Scenes of West Lake" from the Southern Song Dynasty, along with the later "New Ten Scenes" and "Three Additional Scenes," featuring over a hundred attractions along the shore and mountains. Pavilions, temples, pagodas, gardens, causeways, and islands complement the distant mountains and nearby waters, while legends like the Broken Bridge where Lady White Snake met Xu Xian add a layer of storytelling to the landscape. West Lake extends east from Songmuchang in Hangzhou and the north of Baolu Road turning to Shaoniangong Square, passing Baisha Road, Huancheng West Road, Hubin Road, and Nanshan Road to the south of Wansong Ridge, covering all attractions including Wu Mountain, Ziyang Mountain, and Yunju Mountain. To the south, it stretches from Gulou along the eastern foothills of Wu Mountain, Ziyang Mountain, and Yunju Mountain, passing Fengshanmen and Fenghuangshan Road, then following the West Lake water diversion channel to the north bank of the Qiantang River, turning to the Coral Sand Reservoir and ending north of Liufangling. To the west, it runs from Liufangling, Zhugan Mountain, Jiuqu Ridge, and Mingren Ridge to Meiren Peak, Beigaofeng, Lingfeng Mountain, and east of the ridge line of Laohe Mountain. To the north, it follows the foothills of Laohe Mountain (west wall of Zhejiang University), turns 30 m north of Qingzhiwu Road, connects to Yugu Road, Zhejiang University Road, and Shuguang Road, ending south of Songmuchang. West Lake has over 100 attractions, renowned for its "Ten scenes of West Lake", "New ten scenes of West Lake" and "Three reviews · Ten scenes of West Lake". West Lake overview You can explore West Lake on foot, by cruise, on electric bikes, via self-drive, or by riding. Among these, electric bikes are the most convenient and effortless option, with hop-on-hop-off sightseeing vehicles circling the entire lake. Riding along the lakeshore is romantic and leisurely, with many public bike rental spots available. For a boat tour, there are nearly 10 docks around the lake offering various vessels and routes. We highly recommend taking a cruise to Three Pools Mirroring the Moon at the lake center while enjoying the scenic views. Alternatively, you can hail a hand-rowed boat for a more flexible experience with a boatman guiding your tour. North line scenery The north shore of West Lake gathers quite a few attractions, usually starting from the remnant snow on broken bridge at the northeast corner and heading west all the way to Yuewang Temple. You can walk along Bai Causeway to Solitary Hill, visiting cultural attractions like Xiling Seal Engravers' Society, Zhejiang Provincial Museum, Chinese Seal Art Museum, and Zhongshan Park's Crane Pavilion. Enjoy authentic West Lake vinegar fish at Louwailou Restaurant, then cross Xiling Bridge to leave the island - Yuewang Temple and Breeze-ruffled lotus at Quyuan Garden are just a short distance away. If it's a summer day with strong sunlight, it is recommended to stroll along Beishan road, hiding under the dense shade of trees to admire the curve of Broken bridge and the swaying weeping willows on Bai causeway opposite. There are many entrances along the way leading to Precious stone hill, where you can hike for views, and descend to reach Yuewang temple. Yuewang square has many small shops for snacks, and the Impression West Lake show here in the evening is also worth watching. If you have ample time and energy, you can also head to Su causeway from here for a walk to enjoy the panoramic view of West Lake. Southeast coast (Lakeside-Nanshan Road) Another area with a concentration of attractions is the Hubin Road-Nanshan Road along the southeastern coast. Hubin Road is located at the junction between Hangzhou's urban area and the attraction, offering views of West Lake, a dock for West Lake cruises, and the iconic music fountain. The advantage of Hubin Road is its quick access from the attraction to the downtown business district, making it suitable for travelers with a tight itinerary to make a short stop. Head south from Hubin road and walk along Nanshan road, where you can visit attractions like Orioles singing in the willows, Long bridge, Leifeng pagoda, Evening bell at Nanping hill, and Viewing fish at flower harbor. The distance between adjacent attractions is not far, so you can walk or take a sightseeing bus or public transport, which are also convenient. You can arrange a day to visit a few of them according to your preference. Among them, Leifeng pagoda and Evening bell at Nanping hill can be visited in the evening. Listening to the bell at Jingci temple and overlooking the night view of West lake from Leifeng pagoda are both great experiences.China · Hangzhou

Jingting Mountain

6.4
4.5/5
3.8k reviews
Jingting Mountain is located 5 km north of downtown Xuancheng, with its main peak standing at 317m above sea level. Renowned poets like Xie Tiao and Li Bai composed numerous verses about it, with Li Bai's famous line "We gaze at each other, never tiring—only Jingting Mountain" being particularly celebrated. Visitors come here to trace Li Bai's footsteps, while locals enjoy hiking through its vast tea plantations and bamboo groves that provide fresh air. The panoramic views from the mountaintop overlooking the landscape below are spectacular. Buses stop near the Jingting Mountain East Gate Square (parking lot) on Zhaoting North Road close to Shuiyangjiang Avenue. The square features two memorial archways and a statue of Li Bai. It's still 2 km from here to the official mountain climbing steps, but the scenic views along the way are worth stopping for. Passing by Jingting Lake next to the East Gate Square and heading 200 meters north along the smooth road, you'll see the Twin Pagodas of Guangjiao Temple. The ancient temple no longer exists, leaving only a pair of slightly tilted brick pagodas—landmarks of Jingting Mountain built in the 3rd year of Shaosheng during the Northern Song Dynasty (1096 AD). Continuing northward, the roadside is lined with tea plantations and chestnut trees. Upon reaching Jingting Square, you've arrived at the official starting point for the mountain hike. There are many forks in the trails on Jingting Mountain, each marked with signposts. The section from Jingting Square to Taibai Duzuo Tower features concentrated scenic spots, taking approximately 30–50 minutes to climb. Ascending the stone steps, you'll first encounter the ancient Zhaoting Archway. This stone gateway was originally built during the Ming Dynasty and rebuilt in the second year of the Xianfeng era (1852 AD) of the Qing Dynasty. Its name may have some connection to Jingting Mountain's original name, Zhaoting Mountain. Further up, lush and charming bamboo groves stand alongside the mountain path. Along the way, you'll see Huanggu Spring (also called Lovesickness Spring), the statue of Princess Yuzhen, and her epitaph. If interested, you can research online beforehand about the romantic legend between Princess Yuzhen and the poet Li Bai. After passing the Green Snow Teahouse, you'll reach a fork in the path. Turn left for Cuiyun Nunnery or right for Taibai Duzuo Pavilion. Both routes converge shortly ahead, with most visitors turning back at Taibai Duzuo Pavilion to descend. For those continuing northwest for about an hour, you'll reach the main peak, Yifeng Peak. Alternatively, heading northeast from Taibai Duzuo Pavilion for an hour leads to Jing Peak, the second-highest summit featuring Wangjiang Pavilion. Nearby, the wooden plank Cloud Bridge offers panoramic views of Xuancheng, farmland, and the Shuiyang River below. No matter which route you take, always descend toward Jingting Mountain's East Gate to exit the attraction. Jingting Mountain usually has few visitors on weekdays but gets crowded during holidays. For those looking to avoid crowds and explore off the beaten path, visiting after a winter snowfall is highly recommended. The entire mountain is enveloped in serene silence—shout into the empty hills, and snow will cascade down from the bamboo leaves, creating a uniquely delightful experience. Below the Ancient Zhaoting Archway, the Ancient Zhaoting Teahouse offers paid dining services. After your meal, enjoy a pot of Jingting Green Snow tea at the open-air tea seats surrounded by bamboo groves for a truly delightful experience.Xuancheng · 37.4 km from Nanling

Mount Huangshan is famous for its long history. "You would not want to visit mountains after visiting the Five Sacred Mountains, and you would not want to visit the Five Sacred Mountains after visiting Huangshan." Xu Xiake, a great traveler and geographer of the Ming Dynasty, twice ascended Huangshan to witness its magnificence, exclaiming it as "a wonder in life." Dramatic Pines, grotesque rocks, sea of clouds, and hot springs are known as the “Four Musts” of Huangshan. They are the uncanny workmanship of nature and cannot be missed. In addition, the haze, snow scene, and sunrise are unique landscapes of Huangshan. Each landscape has its unique beauty and makes you feel like you are in a fairyland.Huangshan City · 87.9 km from Nanling

Although the scenic area I visited wasn't large, the discounted package deal was incredibly cost-effective! There weren't many people when I went, so there were no queues for any of the facilities, making for a perfect experience. The rafting only ran once an hour because there were few tourists, and we waited a little while, but it was totally worth it. The glass walkway wasn't very clean, which actually made it less scary, haha. I have to give it five stars, mainly because it's super pet-friendly! I took my dog on the cable car, walked on the glass walkway, went on the glass rafting, and the zipline – everything was seamless and we had a blast!

Yongquan Town and Jiubao Hot Spring are my favorite places. They offer healing for both body and mind, with natural hot springs. In autumn, soaking in the pools and watching the maple leaves fall onto the water washes away all your fatigue.

Xihe Town is an ancient port in southern Henan Province that is steeped in the fragrance of tea. The long bluestone street winds like a dragon's spine, with old houses from the Ming and Qing dynasties on both sides. The red sandstone wall foundation holds up the carved wooden building, and the tea plaques drying under the eaves are rolling in the green waves. The stone steps of the ancient wharf are submerged in the tributary of the Huaihe River. Although the grand scene of thousands of tea boats in the old days has passed, the sound of the pestle of the laundry woman still breaks the sparkling waves. The most colorful place is the tea market - the beams and pillars of the century-old tea shop are filled with tea smoke, and the rustling sound of the iron pan frying new leaves, the cocoon patterns between the fingers of the tea farmers and the veins of the baskets tremble at the same frequency. The mottled stage of the boat gang hall is hidden in the deep alley, and the residual warmth of the merchant gang's secret language remains under the flying eaves; the broken walls of the ancient village are covered with vines, and golden chrysanthemums and yellow flowers peek out from the gaps in the arrow crevices. There is no pretentious "ancient town" label here, only the shoulder pole bent by the tea basket and the steam rising from the purple clay teapot in the old teahouse, which have boiled 600 years of commercial port memories into mellow tea soup. You can taste the warmth of time in every sip.

We randomly picked a spot while driving with friends, and it turned out to be the most unforgettable stop on our trip to southern Anhui. There were no crowded tour groups, and we strolled around the cave, joking and laughing. Even the little bats we encountered along the way became fun surprises. This relaxed feeling was truly rare.

My second visit to West Lake was great; the boat tour was excellent. The dock was easy to find, the staff were very friendly, provided clear explanations, and helped with any issues. There were also sightseeing buses, which were nice but a bit pricey. Taking the boat tour and then walking around was both perfectly fine.

The purpose of visiting Xuancheng was to see a relatively low mountain. Jingting Mountain, though only a little over 300 meters high, is known as the "Poetry Mountain of Jiangnan." Xie Tiao wrote "This mountain stretches for a hundred miles" here, and Li Bai climbed it seven times, leaving behind the timeless lines, "We gaze at each other without weariness, only Jingting Mountain remains." A mountain's fame doesn't come from its height, but from the poems it inspires. Ascending the stone steps, one finds deep bamboo groves, azaleas blooming everywhere, and stone tablets inscribed with poems appearing frequently. Halfway up the mountain, the Taibai Alone Pavilion stands quietly amidst the peaks. Standing before the pavilion, one can see the entire city of Xuancheng spread out before them, the Shuiyang River winding like a ribbon. When Li Bai was forced to leave Chang'an for ten years, experiencing the vicissitudes of life, he sat alone on this mountain, birds flying and clouds drifting away, only Jingting Mountain gazing at him, unwavering and steadfast. Continuing on, tea gardens spread out, with the Shi Tao Memorial Hall nestled among them. Mist gradually rises, making the distant mountains appear and disappear. Suddenly, I felt that when Li Bai gazed at Mount Jingting, the mountain was also gazing at him—two solitary figures, complementing each other. Looking back down the mountain, it remained unchanged, not striving for the grandeur of the Five Sacred Mountains, but possessing its own serene beauty. I came here without poetry or wine, only to gaze at the mountain for half a day. To gaze at each other without weariness—perhaps this is what Mount Jingting has been doing for a thousand years: silent, simply waiting for every solitary person to glance at it. Three hundred years ago, Shi Tao spent half his life painting here; three hundred years later, I press the shutter here—Mount Jingting is still the same mountain, only the people gazing at it have changed their way of contemplating. Li Bai once gazed into the distance here, and I gaze into the distance here too; so many things, past and present, are now just fodder for laughter. With its rich cultural history, it's still worth a visit.

Outside the window, a gentle breeze and the glow of the sunset graced the space; inside, relaxation and tranquility prevailed. This trip was truly worthwhile; I look forward to returning.

There are only two slopes, and you still get soaked. The rest are for the elderly. The green mountains and green waters are quite comfortable. I like the elderly. It is comfortable and cool to lie down all the time. The 30-degree temperature feels like 20 degrees on the boat. The water is a bit dirty when you are about to reach the end. There is a free shuttle bus back to the starting point at the end. If you want to change clothes, you still have to park your car at the end and take the shuttle bus to the starting point.

It cost an extra 20 to drive up the mountain, which is my favorite way to travel. I think the scenic area is good, but it feels like a semi-finished product at present. The back half of the scenic area is still under renovation, so I didn't get to play most of it. It was a bit of a scam, and there was no warning. My comment should be regarded as a warning. At present, I just drive in and take pictures!
