Lower Zambezi National Park This park is relatively undeveloped, and its beauty lies in its wilderness state. The diversity of animals is not as extensive as in other large parks, but the opportunities to get up close to the animals that roam the Zambezi channel are plentiful. The park is opposite Zimbabwe's well-known Mana Pool Reserve, so the entire area on either side of the Zambezi River is a huge wildlife sanctuary. The river's edge is overhanging with thick river rims, including ebony and fig trees. Further inland is a floodplain that overflows into a dense forest dotted with winter thorns and giant acacias. The hills that make up the background of the park are covered with hardwood forests. Although Lower Zambezi National Park covers an area of 4,092 square kilometers, most of the competition is concentrated in the valley. There is a cliff at the northern end that forms a physical barrier to most of the park's animal species. Huge herds of elephants, about a hundred of them, can often be seen on the edge of the river. Island-hopping buffalo and antelope are common.
