Edward Burtynsky "Abstraction and the Altered Landscape"
Exhibition time: 2023.10.21 to 2024.2.25
Edward Burtynsky: Abstraction and Altered Landscapes brings together selected works from two different projects that share a commonality. In Edward Burtynsky's 40 years of artistic practice, abstraction gradually became the core method of expression. Edward Burtynsky believed that the goal of work is not only to satisfy the impulse of exploration and discovery, but also to pursue transformation. In the photos, elements that appear to be pointillism calligraphy or brushstrokes are actually industrial waste or mine tailings. The collision of form and content is crucial. They form a whole that makes the whole greater than the sum of its parts and achieves balance in the presentation of information.
Most of the photographs in this exhibition were taken from fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters and drones, so looking down at the landscape from above reveal the design, structure and scale of the Earth's surface. They are views that cannot be seen from a ground perspective. Edward Burtynsky often uses remotely controlled drones in order to position his cameras at low to medium altitudes, away from conventional aviation. Advances in this technology allowed Burtynsky to select perspectives more precisely, and in many cases Burtynsky would eliminate the horizon line of a landscape to heighten the sense of abstraction.
Fan Xi "Simulation Play"
Exhibition time: 2023.10.21 to 2024.2.25
"Fan Xi: The Imitation Game" is artist Fan Xi's solo exhibition in Shanghai. His works include videos, sculptures and installations. The audience's eyes are often attracted by the "variant plants" that exist beyond the boundaries of nature in Fan Xi's works. Real images are modified and edited, and the image changes produced by this artificial intervention continue from Fan Xi's early creations to his works. This exhibition reproduces the copying behavior of the concept of "photography", but this is not a simple copying and imitation of reality, but aims to challenge the traditional way of photographic creation and visualization, redefine and break through the boundaries of the medium, and challenge the audience's understanding of conventional images. The physical scope of the concept is understood, evoking the viewer's exploration of a broader interpretation of photography. Fan Xi’s exhibition is also an exploration of photography and contemporary art by Fotografiska Center for Image Art.
