#fallcolors I visited the Zilker Botanical Garden in Austin during the second week of November and was pleasantly surprised by how much color the property had to offer. The Japanese Garden was the highlight of my visit, with its carefully placed maples turning brilliant shades of red and orange. The sound of water features and the stillness of the ponds created a calm, meditative atmosphere that made it easy to slow down.
Admission was $4, and I paid by card at the entrance. The gardens are open year-round, though some outdoor areas may close during inclement weather, so I checked the website before arriving. I parked in the main lot for free and spent about two hours on site, which felt like the right amount of time.
Wear comfortable shoes. The property covers 26 acres, and while the paths are paved and well maintained, there is still a fair amount of walking involved. I also made the mistake of arriving late in the afternoon and had to skip the woodland path, which I later heard was one of the best spots for fall color.
My suggestion is to arrive early in the day and prioritize the outdoor areas first, saving the indoor spaces for later. I would also recommend bringing a light jacket, as the shade from the trees keeps some areas noticeably cooler than the surrounding city.
