Summer Vacation in the Japanese Alps: Crisp Gifu Mountain Air and the Best Hida Beef of My Life. — traveler post in Gero

Summer Vacation in the Japanese Alps: Crisp Gifu Mountain Air and the Best Hida Beef of My Life.

When planning a summer trip to Japan, I knew right off the bat that I had to dodge the sweltering heat of the big cities. We ended up heading to Gifu Prefecture, just north of Nagoya, and thank god we did—it was a total lifesaver! The mountain air is incredibly crisp and refreshing, kind of like late summer back home in Finland, but obviously with a unique Japanese twist. I'm the type of traveler who lets their stomach do the navigating. I always dive deep into researching the best old-school local joints and street food stalls, making this Gifu trip an absolute paradise for me. Here's a little taste of what our five-day itinerary looked like! We kicked things off in Takayama, which is just a couple of hours by train from Nagoya. Naturally, our first morning started at the Miyagawa Morning Market (Miyagawa Asaichi). It’s been running for over a century and has the most charming vibe. I picked up some local apples and handmade snacks. While the historic old town (Sanmachi Suji) is undeniably gorgeous, you definitely have to weave your way through crowds of tourists. My personal highlight was the Higashiyama Walking Course—a tranquil forest trail lined with about a dozen temples. We barely saw another soul! It was the perfect spot to let the soul rest after a long walk. We also took a quick train ride for a day trip to Hida-Furukawa. Apparently, it's famous as a backdrop for an anime movie (Kimi no Na wa/Your Name, in case we have any fans here—I'm not super into the genre myself, but it was fun watching people scope out filming locations!). I was way more focused on the food. At a spot called Ajidokoro Furukawa, I tried some traditional Gohei mochi (grilled rice cakes glazed with miso paste) and, of course, some melt-in-your-mouth Hida beef. We even stopped by the Seto River to feed the koi fish—they were absolutely massive! Naturally, the cherry on top of the trip was hitting up an onsen (hot spring). As a Finn who loves a good sauna, hot springs just speak straight to my heart. We stayed at Yunoshimakan, an 80-year-old historic ryokan tucked away on a forested hillside in Gero Onsen. We splurged on a room with its own open-air bath (a private onsen is such a luxury!). And don't even get me started on the food... The ryokan's traditional kaiseki dinner was basically a work of art. Every single bite was meticulously crafted, really letting the seasonal ingredients shine. It was the ultimate way to kick back and relax. If you're plotting a summer getaway to Japan and want something a bit off the beaten path (and a whole lot cooler!), I highly recommend heading this way. Flying into Nagoya is your best bet, and it's a breeze to travel from there. Next time, I definitely want to venture further up into Toyama, but for this trip, five days was the perfect escape from the daily grind!

[Gifu] Stay at a registered tangible cultural property! Yunoshimakan in Gero Onsen

Gero Onsen, one of Japan's three most famous hot springs ♨️ ⁡ This time, I stayed at Yunoshimakan, where Emperor Showa also stayed ♪ ⁡ The building, a registered tangible cultural property founded in 1931, makes you feel the history just by being there 🥺 ⁡ It's fun just to stroll around the 166,000m2 grounds ✨ ⁡ The room I stayed in was "Momiji no Ma," a guest room with an open-air bath in the annex. ⁡ The room also had a garden, and the view of the garden from the veranda and open-air bath was absolutely beautiful 🥹 ⁡ As the name suggests, the autumn leaves in the garden look beautiful in the fall 🍁 ⁡ The meals served in the room also used plenty of Hida ingredients, and the Hida beef shabu-shabu melted in the mouth and was really delicious 💕 ⁡ In addition to the main building, which is a tangible cultural property, there was also a retro Western-style building, which was really beautiful 🥺🥺 ⁡ #AccommodationReview #HotSpringTrip #GeroOnsen

Gero Onsen

Gero Onsen is an alkaline, simple hot spring with a pH above 9, creating a silky, soft water. This spring's natural exfoliating and cleansing properties leave skin feeling incredibly smooth and refined, earning it the nickname "beauty bath" or "beautifying skin bath." Gero Onsen Gassho-mura

Located between Hida City and the world heritage site of Shirakawa-go, the Tensho Prefectural Nature Park is about 20 minutes by car from Shirakawa-go and 30 minutes from Hida City. It is a primeval forest with huge beech trees. The Tensho Forest, which is closed for about half a year due to snow, gradually becomes green from June every year, and the breath of life can be felt everywhere in the forest. After entering September, the jacaranda trees in the park also emit a faint caramel fragrance, telling passers-by that autumn is approaching, and the red leaves also appear in brilliant red as if they want to burn the mountaintops.

I had a great impression of Gero Onsen Hotel. It was better to walk around the hotel without going out than to visit many attractions. Gero Onsen is said to be one of the three most famous hot springs in Japan. There are also many foot baths in the town. If you feel cold after walking, soaking your feet will make you feel full of energy! !

Its greatest charm is the rich natural scenery and simple rural life. The sweetfish that grow in the clear Maze River are known as the best in Japan in terms of shape, taste, and fragrance. It is also the most popular fishing spot for Japanese sweetfish anglers.
