Shengshan Fortress: A military ruin deep in the Lesser Khingan Mountains, blanketed by forest Travel about 40 km north from Sunwu County, and you'll find rolling hills and dense forests on both sides of the road. As you turn onto the side road in Yanjiang Township, a mountainous landscape covered in natural broad-leaved mixed forest unfolds—you've arrived at Shengshan Fortress. First, you see the forest. Shengshan Fortress is located at the northern foot of the Lesser Khingan Mountains. It covers a total area of over 100 square kilometers, with forests accounting for more than 90% of that. Oak, birch, poplar, and linden trees grow together, their straight trunks and interlocking canopies overhead filtering the sunlight into fragments. The forest is also dotted with precious species like Manchurian ash, Manchurian walnut, and Amur cork tree. With layers of branches and leaves, walking along the forest trails feels cool and moist, filled with the scent of pine resin and humus. Locals say many of these trees are elms planted years ago. They have now grown into a forest with gnarled trunks and large, dense canopies, creating a unique landscape. When the wind blows, the entire forest emits a low, steady sound, like waves. Entering the ruins area. As you follow the trail inward, the ground vegetation gradually thins, revealing traces of concrete and stone construction. Shengshan Fortress is quite large, consisting of three parts: the Shengwutun Village Brigade Headquarters, the Shengshan Main Position, and the Maolantun Field Position. The main surviving relics include command posts, bunkers, communication trenches, artillery batteries, and underground passages. The first stop is the garrison company barracks. This is a semi-underground reinforced concrete building divided into more than 10 rooms, with thick walls covered in mottled dark gray. As you step inside, the light dims. The corridor is narrow and damp, with a low ceiling, and your footsteps echo clearly on the concrete floor. Continuing forward, you'll find the underground command center. The passages crisscross, with some leading to the surface and others connecting to different fortifications. You can still see traces of wiring and ventilation duct openings on the walls. Standing inside, you can feel the mountain's chill seeping in from all sides. Yalei Highland Artillery Battery. Climbing a gentle slope along the trail, you reach Yalei Highland. This is one of the highest points of the entire fortress, and the view suddenly opens up. Four artillery batteries are lined up along the edge of the highland, spaced 20 meters apart, with a row of smaller batteries nearby. The concrete bases of the batteries remain intact, but the cannons are long gone, leaving only empty circular grooves. Standing by the battery and looking into the distance, the Heilongjiang River on the other side of the mountain glows with a grayish-blue light. The current is slow, and the outlines of the fields and villages on the bank are blurred. The wind blows from the river, passing through the gaps between the forest and the fortifications, carrying the scent of grass, trees, and water vapor. Details in the forest. Coming down from the battery and walking back along another path, you can see the outline of anti-tank trenches by the roadside. The trenches are overgrown with grass and embedded in the hillside at varying depths. Posts for barbed wire can occasionally be found in the bushes. The iron has rusted to a dark brown, making them easy to miss if you aren't looking carefully. Several foxholes and machine gun bunkers are distributed along the mountain, their concrete edges covered with moss and lichen, transitioning in color from gray-white to dark green. The boardwalk through the forest is well-paved and easy to walk on. The canopies on both sides of the path block most of the sky, and occasionally, spots of light filter through the leaves, falling on the concrete ruins and creating a strong contrast between light and dark. Practical information. The scenic area is located in Yanjiang Township, Sunwu County, about a 40-minute to 1-hour drive from the county seat. It is open from approximately 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with last entry at 3:30 PM. The ruins area consists mainly of concrete paths and dirt roads, so wearing comfortable shoes is advisable. The temperature in the underground fortifications is much lower than outside, so bring a light jacket if you visit in summer. There are many mosquitoes in the forest, so bring repellent. When I emerged from the forest, the sky was already darkening. Looking back at the mountainous area blanketed by the canopy, the traces of concrete and steel gradually blurred in the twilight, leaving only the sound of the forest waves ringing in my ears. Those fortifications and trenches have been lying here for a long time, and the trees continue to grow around them.

Guys, you won't believe this. I found a severely underrated summer getaway on the border of Heilongjiang—Sunwu. This place is really off the beaten path. How off the beaten path? When I arrived in town and asked for directions, an old man looked at me in surprise and said, "You traveled all this way just to visit here?" But it's exactly this kind of uncrowded place that truly deserves to be called "wild luxury." 📍 Where is Sunwu? It's in the central part of Heihe City, at the northern foot of the Lesser Khingan Mountains, facing Russia's Amur Oblast across the Heilong River. The county covers 4,318 square kilometers, with a forest coverage rate of 48% and 710,000 mu of wetlands. Calling it a "natural oxygen bar" is an understatement. In August, daytime temperatures are around 23–24°C, and you need a blanket to sleep at night. Air conditioning? Not needed. 🚗 How to get there? Tested travel options I personally tested two routes— ✈️ Fly to Heihe Aihui Airport, rent a car, and drive about 116 km to Sunwu, which takes about an hour and a half via the Beihei Highway. 🚄 Take a train directly to Sunwu Station. It runs on the Beihei Railway, over 500 km from Harbin. It's an overnight train, so you just sleep and arrive. The station building was renovated in 2021 and now handles an average of 600 passengers per day. It's a small, quiet station, and getting off the train feels like you've booked the whole place. ⚠️ Driving tips: This year, the section of National Highway G331 from the Xunke-Sunwu border to Heihe is under renovation and expansion, with full closure for construction from April 15–October 1. If you are coming from the direction of Xunke, you must detour. Check your navigation in advance so you don't get stuck. Provincial Highway S516 from Xunke to Sunwu is also under construction; it's recommended to come via the Bei'an direction for a smoother trip. The county is installing new energy charging piles this year, so if you're driving an electric vehicle, confirm the charging locations before you arrive. 🗓️ How to plan your itinerary? Three days and two nights is just right ▫️ Day 1 Arrival → Exhibition Hall of Evidence of Crime Committed by Japanese Invaders → Stroll around town The exhibition hall is a 3A scenic spot and is free. It's open from 9:00 AM–3:00 PM in summer; note that it's closed on Mondays. The hall isn't large, but the content is substantial, featuring historical artifacts and scene recreations. It takes about an hour and a half to walk through the exhibition halls covering "Japanese Invasion of Northeast China" and "Sunwu During the Japanese Puppet Regime." Afterward, take a stroll through the town. This small city features a mix of old Russian-style buildings and Chinese-style courtyards, making it charming to just walk around. ▫️ Day 2 Shengshan Fortress (the main highlight of the day) → Border River Resort Area → Russian Customs Museum The main event is here. Shengshan Fortress is a 4A scenic spot, 38 km from the town, a 40-minute drive. Adult tickets are 40 yuan, group tickets for nine or more are 30 yuan, and student group visits are free. It's open from 8:00 AM–5:00 PM from May to October. This was originally the Huormojin Fortress built by the Japanese invaders in 1934. The main battle area covers over 100 square kilometers, with 49 sites and ruins scattered throughout the forest. Artillery groups, underground command centers, large concrete fortifications, hidden underground barracks and warehouses... walking inside is honestly quite oppressive, but the weight of history is something you can't get elsewhere. The entire scenic area is also a national forest park, with 13,828 hectares of forest wrapping around the ruins, creating a fascinating contrast between history and nature. In the afternoon, head to the Shenglitun Border River Tourist Resort. Standing by the Heilong River, you can see Russian villages on the other side with the naked eye. When the smoke rises from the chimneys, it feels very cinematic. Then, stop by the Russian Customs Museum in Manda Township along the river. It's filled with nesting dolls, traditional costumes, and exotic handicrafts—great for photos. ▫️ Day 3 Morning mist along the Xunbiela River → Departure Get up early and take a walk by the Xunbiela River. The morning mist on the river is layered, and combined with the dense greenery on both banks, the scene looks like a blockbuster movie straight from your phone. Pack up and head home. 🏡 Where to stay? There's a cluster of vacation wooden cabins run by locals by the border river. The one I stayed in faced the Heilong River when I opened the window, with Russian forests and distant mountains on the other side. It's an old wooden structure with modernized interiors, and the floor heating and hot water are great. Sitting in the courtyard at night watching the stars, with the sound of the border river as white noise—there are far fewer mosquitoes than in the south. In August, the temperature at night is 12–13°C. Wrapped in a thin blanket, drinking a cup of hot tea, I felt completely relaxed from the inside out. My friends think I'm bragging when I tell them about this "living on the border" experience. 💡 Practical tips · August is the tail end of the rainy season, so showers can happen anytime. Carry rain gear with you; don't find it troublesome. · Mobile signals in border areas can be spotty, so download offline maps in advance. · The town isn't big; for daily shopping, the central street is enough. · There's a large temperature difference between day and night. Wear short sleeves during the day, but you must add a jacket at night—a thin down jacket isn't an exaggeration. · Sunwu is known as the "Hometown of Large-Fruit Sea Buckthorn in China." By the end of August, the sea buckthorn berries start to ripen. You can buy fresh fruit and sea buckthorn juice at roadside stalls; the sweet and sour taste is very refreshing. · There's also Angus beef here, raised locally. The meat quality is truly different, so don't miss it if you come across it. Honestly, a place like Sunwu isn't for people who want to rush through tourist spots. It's for travelers who are willing to slow down, spend a whole day daydreaming on the border line, and be enveloped by both history and nature. If you're tired of crowded, popular destinations, come to Sunwu in August. The wind here is cool, the sky is blue, and the smoke from the chimneys on the other side is a distant view you can almost touch.

米老鼠mjrNot long ago, I visited my partner's hometown in Sunwu County, Heihe City, Heilongjiang Province. With some free time on my hands, I headed east from Jiefang Road, passing by the Xunbiela Park and the boardwalk of the Wetland Park. Continuing further, I arrived at the Sunwu County Museum of Evidence of Japanese War Crimes. Admission was free, and across from the museum was a gas station. The museum building originally served as an officers' club during the Japanese occupation. The second floor features an exhibition dedicated to the "comfort women," while the first floor displays military equipment. The museum's collection is extensive, likely consisting entirely of artifacts from the nearby Shengshan Fortress. These include engineering corps equipment, garrison weapons, maps, and documents. At the entrance on the first floor, there is a manually operated alarm bell made from artillery shell casing. When visitors enter or leave, ringing the bell produces a clear, metallic sound that echoes deeply and lingers in the air.
_TI***pzThis summer, we visited Tangwanghe in Yichun. The Tangwanghe Scenic Area was truly relaxing; it's a wonderful place to escape the summer heat. We listened to the rustling of the pines in the forest, admired the quirky rocks, and lingered among the pigs in the woods, while the birch forest inspired endless daydreams.
丘瑀The adorable deer in the deer park and the incredibly high levels of negative ions in the forest park made this trip full of joy and relaxation. The driver was warm, polite, and humorous, picking us up and dropping us off at the attractions on time. A happy and enjoyable journey! 👍
Anonymous userIt's worth a visit. The place is large, so you can take your time exploring with your kids. The most amazing parts are the deer enclosure near the end in the afternoon and the lakeside area outside the visitor center – both are incredibly beautiful.
谁还不知道谁是个谁啊We arrived at the deer enclosure around 3 PM. Initially, we were worried that the deer, having been fed in the afternoon, wouldn't want to interact with us. However, once inside, we found the deer to be quite friendly. They enjoyed corn kernels, and whenever they sensed we were feeding them, other deer would come over and ask for food. One old deer even followed us all the way inside – quite amusing and intelligent. As the sun set, the entire meadow was bathed in golden light, creating a beautiful and photogenic scene.
Anonymous userIt was a fantastic experience. The entire hike offered constantly changing scenery. Squirrels even approached us for food along the way. From the high platform, we enjoyed panoramic views of the mountains, and on the way down, a stream was right beside us. Three different ways to experience the mountain in one place – truly wonderful! I highly recommend climbing to the high platform and walking the entire way to the exit.
你奈我何OLKWhen it rains heavily, the water turns yellowish-brown. There are two routes for the tour, with a fork at a point where several shops are concentrated. The birch forest route perfectly avoids the crowds and leads directly to the main attractions, but the downside is that there's a section with hundreds of stairs to climb at the end. The other route starts from the forest itself and is less strenuous, but it's very crowded. When I went, the road was under construction, so I had to take a detour.
