Gwangju Confucian School

Gwangju Hyanggyo is a majestic brick building standing between Gudong and Sadong in Gwangju Metropolitan City. Township schools include Confucian temples dedicated to Confucius (enshrining the sage's portraits and plaques) and school buildings that teach the sage's doctrines, and have always played the role of a state educational institution. It was originally built (1398) at the foot of Ruishi Mountain. Later, according to the suggestion of the county supervisor Quan Shouping, it was moved to its current location. In the 30th year of King Seongjo (1597), it was rebuilt due to a fire when Dingyou was in chaos again. The existing buildings include Daesungjeon, Myunglundang, Donghu, Xihu, Neisanmen, Waisanmen, Dongjae, Xijae, Ten buildings, including Wenhuizhai and Yangshizhai, are characterized by their simple structure and unpretentiousness.
