About Karamay: Karamay is located in the Junggar Basin in the northwestern part of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. It was where the first large oil field was discovered after the founding of the new China in the 1950s. The area was named after the oil. “Karamay” means “black oil” in the Uyghur language. The main natural sights here include World Ghost Town, Black Oil Mountain, Ailik Lake, Baiyang River Grand Canyon, and the wild Euphrates poplar forests.
