Construction of the Basilica of Santa Maria began in 1865 and went through three main stages of construction, and in December 2009 the church reopened after a third renovation and extension was completed. Several repairs have resulted in a combination of traditional and modern architectural styles in the church. Some tourists may feel that the style is not unified enough, but the flaws do not hide the flaws.
