The lake is not frozen all year round, the two sides are steep and densely forested. There are rivers at the northern end of the lake that connect with the North Sea. Located at the northern end of the Grand Canyon fault that runs through the Scottish Highlands, it is the third largest freshwater lake in the UK. At 52 feet above sea level, 24 miles long and one mile wide, the only waterway to the outside is the River Nice.
