Mount St. Helens is an active volcano located in Scamenia County, Washington State, Pacific Northwest, United States, 154 kilometers south of Seattle. It is part of the Cascade Mountains. The mountain takes its name from the British diplomat Lord St Helens, a friend of the explorer George Vancouver who surveyed the site in the 18th century. Mount St. Helens is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, which contains more than 160 active volcanoes, and is known for its ash eruptions and pyroclastic flows.
