In the Spring and Autumn Period, Luyuan Town was originally the land where Wu Wangfuchai sent deer, hence the name. By the Song and Yuan Dynasties, Luyuan had formed a market town. After the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the market was prosperous and merchants gathered, becoming a big town on the riverside. Luyuan Ancient Town has a long history, developed culture and numerous historic sites. The stone tools, jade and pottery unearthed from the Neolithic site of Xuwan in the territory show that ancestors lived and reproduced on this ancient land more than 6,000 years ago. There is Hongji Bridge built in the first year of Ming Dynasty (1621). Not far from the west of the town is Dongdu Garden, which is the starting point of Master Jianzhen's successful eastward journey to Japan. According to legend, the Salt and Iron Pond in Zhenbei was opened by Wu Wangbi of the Western Han Dynasty to transport salt and iron. In the middle of the Song Dynasty, in order to prevent the backflow of seawater, a sea area (also known as a sea dam) extending for hundreds of miles was built parallel to the Yantie Pond. The Yandun was built during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty and was used for anti-Japanese alarm. The ruins are clearly identifiable. There is also a ginkgo tree planted in the Yuan Dynasty Chengzong Dade period (1297-1307) in the east of the town, which is now listed as a provincial cultural relic.
