Nengren Temple

Nengren Temple is the only nunnery for Buddhist nuns in the entirety of Chongqing! It’s nestled amongst the bustling Jiefangbei area of downtown and is easy to miss if you are not looking for it! We stumbled upon it by complete accident while exploring downtown Chongqing. We were welcomed in by the nuns and shown around. We came around 3pm so we missed the vegetarian lunch they prepare for pilgrims at noon! It was free to enter the temple and we were even offered incense to burn. The temple is made up of several rooms between two buildings that house relics and statues. Nengren Temple Many tourists from other places may know that there is a Luohan Temple near Jiefangbei, where the incense is continuous. But many people may not know that there is a Nengren Temple next to the Bayi Delicious Food Street at Jiaochangkou. Actually, there is a pharmacy inside the Nengren Temple, which many locals may know, called Shizhen Pavilion. Nengren Temple, originally named "Sanjiao Hall", is located at No. 92 Zhonghua Road, Yuzhong District, Chongqing. It is one of the larger nunneries in Chongqing, founded in the Ming Dynasty. In ancient times, it was known as Haiyun Temple. In the twelfth year of the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty (1886), on the "Complete Map of Chongqing Prefecture", the current Zhonghua Road was called Yangliu Street, and the location of today's Nengren Temple was marked as Sanjiao Hall. It was not until the 1920s that it was renamed Nengren Temple. Nengren Temple is not large, it feels like a small house in the bustling city. Nengren Temple has four main halls, namely Shu Tuo Hall, Guanyin Hall, Ancestral Hall, and Zen Hall. From the early 1960s to the 1970s, during the ten years of the Cultural Revolution, religious activities were halted, the halls were occupied, the nuns went to work, and the temple was destroyed. After the catastrophe of the Cultural Revolution, the government intervened to return the temple and allocated 90,000 yuan. The temple itself raised 180,000 yuan to renovate the major halls, and it was reopened in 1983. In 1985, there were 450 lay Buddhists in the area, and usually 100-400 believers participated in activities. A "Jade Buddha" that survived the Cultural Revolution is now in the Guanyin Hall, where the incense is prosperous and continuous throughout the year. There are also three celadon incense burners, which were specially made for Sanjiao Hall in the twentieth year of the Republic of China. During the Cultural Revolution, they were bought by the "Wu Chaoshou" restaurant to serve food, and after the implementation of policies, they were returned to their original owner after much effort. It is said that these incense burners can keep food fresh for ten days to half a month without spoiling, which has aroused the interest of many people.
