In its initial days tracing back to 1948, the Zoo Miami housed elephants, lions, and Rhinoceros in 45 acres of park. Historically, Zoo Miami— the only sub-tropical zoo in the continental US, was known as Crandon Park Zoo on the island of Key Biscayne. In 1980, zoo Miami relocated to Richmond Naval Air Station and was known as Miami Metro Zoo with a total of 38 exhibits, the newly added White Bengal tiger and covering 200 acres.

Today, zoo Miami is the largest and the oldest Zoo in Florida and the fifth-largest Zoo in the US.
