Hamburg Cherry Blossom Festival | Hamburg
Celebration
The Hamburg Cherry Blossom Festival, established in 1968, traces its history back to the beginning of German-Japanese friendship. That year, the first cherry blossom trees were planted along the shores of Lake Alster. At that time, every Japanese resident of Hamburg received a cherry blossom tree as a gift from the Japanese Consulate General. Today, Hamburg residents and people from all over the world can enjoy the magnificent pink cherry blossoms along the Alster Lake every year. Traditionally, the festival opens with a grand fireworks display over Lake Alster. On May 29, 2026, at 10:30 PM, a spectacular fireworks display will illuminate the sky above Lake Alster, attracting countless spectators to the lakeside or aboard charming boats to enjoy this magnificent spectacle. The dazzling fireworks are reflected on the surface of Lake Alster, with numerous boats navigating the water to ensure everyone can find the best viewing spot. After the grand fireworks display, the two-day Cherry Blossom Festival will begin on May 31, 2026, with free admission. The event begins at the Japanese garden teahouse within the Planten un Blomen gardens. Throughout the year, visitors can enjoy Japanese garden culture, picturesque tea pavilions, and exotic flowers and plants from across Asia. The Cherry Blossom Festival offers even more exciting experiences for lovers of Japanese culture. Visitors can enjoy a variety of music, sample delicious food and drinks, admire traditional costumes, and participate in various workshops and performances, such as traditional sword fighting competitions.
