The Grand Enlightenment Temple in Yixing was founded during the Xianchun period of the Southern Song Dynasty (1265-1274), with a history of over seven hundred years. It is also the ancestral monastery where Master Hsing Yun, the founder of Fo Guang Shan, was ordained. In 2005, due to a fortunate convergence of circumstances, the temple was rebuilt by Master Hsing Yun, the 48th generation disciple and founder of Fo Guang Shan. As Master Hsing Yun served as the abbot here, the place is also known as 'Fo Guang Ancestral Temple, the Grand Enlightenment Temple'. Located in the southwest of Wuxi, Jiangsu, near the eastern side of Yun Lake and surrounded by mountains and water, the scenic beauty of the area is breathtaking and provides a unique regional landscape feature.
