The Frankfurt financial district is one of the more important financial centers in Europe. The Frankfurt Stock Exchange is also one of the four largest stock exchanges in the world. There are currently about 336 German and foreign banks and financial institutions here, including Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, Dresden Bank, Citibank, Bank of China, etc. In 1957, the German Central Bank composed of German state banks was established here, the Deutsche Monetary Fund was established in 1994, and the European Central Bank was established in 1998. The various bank buildings together form the German skyscraper cluster.
