Photos of Nikko Toshogu Shrine

There are many Toshogu Shrines all over Japan, but the one located in Nikko City is the head office, and it is also the tomb of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. When you come to Toshogu Shrine, you can admire the exquisite woodworking carvings of Japan's Edo period. One of the more famous ones is in a stable, carved with three monkeys covering their eyes, ears and mouths with their claws. The Toshogu Shrine in Nikko, Rinnoji Temple and Futarayama Shrine, together known as "Two Shrines and One Temple", has been included in the World Heritage List as part of "Shrines and Temples in Nikko".
