Date of stay 21/22nd September 2022…. Room 307. On first impressions nicely situated On approaching entrance dirty steps needs a good clean and the arms to velvet settees in reception shone with the dirt from hands. Booking in staff lovely BUT the lift was out of order and we were on third floor I have asthma my neighbour a walking problem ,we have a room with sea view, due to lift being out of order we were offered a 2nd floor room no view we took a look at room ,we declined due to smell in room so we struggle with original 3rd floor room, very large but unwelcoming. The view if we could have seen out of the window properly would have been nice also the window was nailed to the frame shut, No fire escape if needed then came the cobwebs not only in the corner of the ceiling but down the wall ,the wall lights were so dirty inside with dust it did not give the light it should have.head board thick with dust, bed side table thick dust on legs skirting board the same ,then came the shower mat you stand on for safety in the bath was so rank when I picked it up I drop it it was black with scum and black mould. I can’t even guess how long it’s been since it was cleaned. Obviously we called the manager ,he was very apologetic and offered another room, we had already seen another room and was not happy he offered to have our room cleaned while we were out which we agreed to unfortunately who ever he got to go to the room only changed the bath mat and sprayed what ever to make the room smell nice, but as I walked to the television I could see the cobwebs on the light still so again we checked and sure enough the room had not been cleaned, you cannot Blame the manager for this but the staff in housekeeping . The royal is a very prestigious building and is very lucrative for you business but you are letting the side down when you do not take care of the of its decor and clients, as we were not the only ones complaining in some bed rooms the plaster is coming off the wall through damp and smells ,the stairs and bannisters we filthy and I mean filthy,I would not be writing this review if I didn’t think I needed to ,Alex the manager was excellent ,but you won’t have him long if he has to put up with this many complaints, and on the good side, the bar and restaurant were good, again staff were great and we loved Anika who was in charge and she had time for the guests and their needs. The dining area would be at a loss with out her whilst in Whitby we got chatting with the locals and unfortunately the royal is know as a dive which is definitely not good for business. And on a closing point we were cheeky and worked how much you were making @£75 a person not a room a night so before this gold mind falls down around your ears do something get a cleaning team in there and do a deep clean and and builders to do repairs. Alex was kind enough to give us a discount on the first night charges. It’s a shame that the staff have to endure these complaints d

No hot water for bath or shower, water little more than lukewarm. Nothing was done to address this despite two reminders. They knew of issue but failed to inform us at time of taking room. Breakfast in room booked for 8am not delivered by 8.30so called to chivvy it up, hadn't arrived 20mins later rang again, another 15 mins hadn't arrived was about to go down, but had eventually arrived over hour after booked. Same on day three, no apologies or asking if we had enjoyed our stay. This spoilt a badly needed break , room had been upgraded hence 2*, but poor for hotel of this 'standard', have stayed many times in past, but never again. It like a place that is near to closure, and cares more about money than the customer. Won't repeat a stay here again. Also could not book a table in dining room on two out of three nights between 6 and 8pm, as they had coach party. So we voted with feet and took our money elsewhere, thank God we did!
Blacksmiths Arms Inn

Great pub in a great location near Scarborough and the Cleveland Way. Comfortable rooms, clean bathrooms, and provisions, including tea, coffee, biscuits, water, shampoo, and shower gel, are restocked daily. Really friendly and helpful staff, who went out of their way to help when the twin room we thought we had booked did not exist, and we needed breakfast earlier than the start time as we were leaving early to walk the Cleveland Way. Please note that if you are booking a room through a third party website, they all advertise the Blacksmiths Arms as having twin rooms when they do not. And breakfast is served from 8.30am. Overall, a very pleasant stay in a lovely pub.
The Grand Scarborough

My wife and I stayed at The Grand back on 25/03/22 and we were so impressed that we just had to return. The staff are still helpful and friendly, the food is excellent and the room we stayed in was impressive. It was clean, comfy and had just been decorated and fitted with a power shower. The seagulls on our window sill could be quite noisy, but remember we are at the seaside! We paid £200 in total for bed, breakfast and evening meal, which I found to be excellent value. Disregard all the negative reports that you read about this hotel, make a visit and decide for yourself. Perhaps, if these people want 5 star, that will have to pay 5 star prices. We will certainly be visiting The Grand again.

I have just returned home from a Majestic Holiday stay at the above venue .I am going to be honest the room we stayed in was clean had fresh linen on arrival ,comfortable and quiet .It is a old hotel but the communal areas were good ranging from a grand foyer to a clean friendly reception .I have no criticism of the breakfast food and range of items,it was good.On the other hand the main meals were stodgy no inventive bland overcooked limited vegetables chicken legs that looked that they had come off very old birds pork steaks rubbery chewy and tasteless .On the last night I had scampi which was very good this was the only one of the 4 night meals I had whicn was worth eating. The sad thing is for dessert that night was I had with tinned fruit the poorest custard I have ever eaten watery made with just hot water and limited custard powder that is my last memory of the restaurant. .The bar was good earlier in the week the gentleman and the mature lady were very good hardworking and pleasant .The prices in the bar very reasonable the Tetley beer well looked after. The only team member who disturbed me was on the last night was DICK TURPIN a scruffy abrupt man wearing a black hand kerchief as a mask, did he have Covid making the bar team look like farce this did not give that area a very professional look.On checkout Imust congratulate the reception team who all holiday were attentive polite and professional..I have been truthful about this venue

Granby Hotel

When I arrived at the Granby Hotel in Scarborough I was a little disappointed, the exterior and communal areas looked neglected and tired. The reception and seating area reminded me of a working men's club! I booked in and I was given my room key. I stayed in room 5, a twin room, this was one of the few rooms available in Scarborough for that night. The room, bedding and towels were clean and smelt fresh. I settled down to watch TV but was distracted by another guests mobile phone - every time they received a message I could hear their phone buzzing and vibrating in the next room - this was a regular occurrence for over three hours. The walls are thin! Thankfully the buzzing stopped before I settled down to sleep. At around 11pm the hotel went quiet; it was peaceful and calm, I fell asleep easily. I woke once in the night aching as I sleep on my front or side and the mattress was firm, so I woke; hips, shoulders and lower back aching. Eventually I fell back to sleep and in the morning l woke feeling quite rested. The morning was similar to the evening you could hear other guests moving around, their conversations and them taking a shower! The bathroom in the twin room is small, but functional, the shower definitely wasn't a power shower! I would stay at The Granby Hotel again. There is parking to the side and rear of the hotel. The majority of the parking is pay and display with a couple of disabled bays (you still have to pay). If you have a Yorkshire County Council parking disc there is two hours free parking in bays at the side of the Granby Hotel. Yorkshire County Council parking discs are available from a number of retailers in the town and are free - they allow free parking in certain areas of the town for a limited time.

YHA Whitby

YHA Whitby's location is stunning - right by the 199 steps, St Mary's Church, the Abbey and with beautiful views across the river and town. It's a beautiful historic building with an absolutely lovely private garden. The table football was also much enjoyed! Abbey entry is free for hostel guests which was a bonus. However, it feels like it is coasting on its location and exterior, and was a disappointment compared with other YHA hostels. Firstly check-in is 3-10pm, despite the YHA website saying it's 24hrs (hopefully they will update this). There's also not a 24hr reception, again contrary to the YHA website. There's a sign directing you to the cafe out of these hours, but it was a big contrast to other hostels where there's usually someone around to ask for info, provide key for the luggage room, answer qs and deal with any issues even if you can't check in yet. Definitely not a warm welcome. The room was decent but the shower leaked all over the floor - a sign said to leave the showerhead pointing down to avoid floods, but the bath tap stuck out so much this meant you couldn't get under it and the mixer tap was awkward. I doubt that any of the management have tried showering in it. The bathroom is looking tired. No binliners in bins, and no storage in rooms either (they have changed completely from the TripAdvisor photos which are from 2016!!) Loud music from the kitchen underneath us at 730am on Monday morning. Overall, the hostel could do with some TLC - and will need it if features like the beautiful conservatory, where grass is now growing through the glass panes, are to last. The cafe is haphazard and the breakfasts a shambles - no trays, cutlery running out, coffee running out, juice running out (and not being speedily replaced as happens elsewhere), bits being left off the toast machine so the toast falls on the floor, etc. They seemed to only cook 4 eggs at a time and have no queuing system so we had to wait a long while for cooked breakfasts while others came straight in and were served immediately. Some staff were friendly but others were completely uninterested. We wanted to mention these issues quietly to reception as we left, but guess what... shutters up again and no one around.

We have stayed here previously, and again now during the refurbishment. Both stays have been excellent. The hotel was nicely busy this time, and the staff were cheerful, helpful and efficient. The fish and chips is fantastic and the temporary dining room has been done out nicely with rustic wooden tables, comfortable seating and nice lighting. The views are outstanding and we look forward to coming again and seeing the results of the hard work happening now.
