This was the first place I stayed when I arrived in NZ for my working holiday. It's very centrally located, the staff were incredibly friendly, and it was a fantastic place to stay.
Pros: The location is superb; it's probably the closest accommodation to Lake Tekapo, right in the heart of the tourist area. It's an easy walk to all the restaurants and the Church of the Good Shepherd. The hygiene is good, the room is very clean, and although the facilities are basic, they meet essential needs. There's a shared kitchen and a common lounge area with beautiful lake views. It's very popular, and both check-in and check-out are convenient. The bathroom is quite spacious. You can park your car in the free public parking lot in the scenic area.
Cons: The room space is very cramped, and the windows in the lake-view rooms are small. The facilities are relatively simple. Compared to its price, the value for money is low.
It was Easter 🐣 week so the shop was closed, so I called and they opened the door for me.
The shop is a bar, so it may be crowded on normal days, but I think it's a good idea to check with the staff. Everyone is very friendly and kind, so you can enter the room with peace of mind. The private room is as shown in the photo, and it even has a refrigerator. It was kept clean and very comfortable. It was raining and the outside temperature dropped, but it didn't affect the room. The shared space is the kitchen, shower and toilet, but this shop has been there since the 1800s, so you can feel the history. However, the kitchen has been remade and is induction compatible. I have only ever used gas, but I was able to use it without any problems!
I also decided on this hotel because I was planning to watch a rugby game. It is about a 15-minute walk away, and there are McDonalds and other places, and the street lights are basically on, so I think the security is not a problem.
I highly recommend this hotel over other Doritomi, so please give it a try!
Thank you for a wonderful time!
The location is quite good, right across from a tourist attraction. Check-in was easy, and the kitchen is spacious and well-equipped, perfect for cooking. It's open 24 hours, so you can even whip up a late-night snack.
This is a hotel that was converted from a historic prison. The staff are very nice and the guests are very friendly. It feels like a big family living together. It is not too far to walk to the city, so everything is very convenient.
Gute Ausstattung, es ist halt ein Hostel.
Leider auch etwas laut und die Hochbetten sind wackelig, sodass man merkt, wenn sich der andere unten bzw oben umdreht.

Hostel vibe that has everything you need. The location was great as it was very easy to walk the seal colony and whale watching tour.
We did our laundry their too which was easy to use and the host was very helpful with that as well as when we had issue with checking in.
A few hobs didn’t work in the kitchen which make it a bit challenging to cook if there were other people.
Very Good

GGuest UserA decent hostel in a not-so-far location from the centre. The kitchen and common areas are specious enough and kept clean daily regardless of careless people that were not taught how to clean after themselves. There’s parking available free of charge which is great with an alternative to park on neighbouring streets if full. The beds are not the best, very wobbly and noisy when you turn or tried to climb up. Separate sockets and lights by each bed are great. There are lockers but you need your own bad lock. Staff was polite and friendly.
YYangyang05The location is next to the road, so there will be noise at night when cars pass by quickly and the houses here are generally not soundproofed. But if the room is near the parking lot, maybe it can be improved. Everything else is perfect, because there is a living room and an open kitchen, two bedrooms (one with a single bed and one with a double bed), a separate bathroom with dry and wet areas, and a hair dryer, which is a great deal
9914JJThe Korean boss is friendly and enthusiastic, and will help answer any travel questions. Although the room facilities are not very new, they are all clean and tidy. It is not close to the city center, but it is still within walking distance. Parking is right in front of the room, which is very convenient!
AAnonymous UserGreat room, everything you need for the night.
Location not close to centre, but super close to the railway station for the Costal Pacific train, which was my reason for booking this motel.
Reception staff very friendly, even providing bottle of milk for the morning coffee!
GGuest UserWhen I arrived I was told I had an upstairs unit. Unfortunately I had a lot of luggage. Changing to a lower level was not possible. But an offer was made to assist me with the luggage.
I drove towards the unit and there is no available parking close by. I drove back to the front desk and explained my problem. They told me that they could move a car to allow me to park. One of the staff followed me back and took care of finding a space and also delivering a cone so that I could hold the space when I went out to dinner. He also came back to help with the luggage. So great staff! But the lack of parking (because they let people leave their cars there when they fly) would make me reconsider staying again.
I’d booked an Economy studio and was given an Economy two bedroom. Unit was a blend of older and newer features. Bathroom was updated but shower stall looked older and not as clean. Good water pressure.
Ordered breakfast at the on-site Restaurant. The waffles with berry compote & lemon curd was a large portion but very tasty. Great coffee.
GGUIYINGThe hotel has a parking lot and no breakfast, but the location of the hotel is very good. It is a few minutes away from the large supermarket, Chinatown and food street. It is very convenient to eat. You can also come to the supermarket to buy food and cook for yourself. This hotel has Chinese service.
GGuest UserThere are snow-capped mountains outside the window, and the scenery is beautiful. The hotel facilities are very good, exceeding expectations. It is very convenient to climb Mount Cook!
But there is very little food in this place, and there is no supermarket. It is best to bring some cooked food and bread and fruit with you.
But please note that if the cooked food has a strong smell, you may be charged extra
GGuest UserIt was my first time staying at a motel so I was a bit nervous, but they were very accommodating to my early check-in and the room was very clean.
There was also a laundry room, which was helpful for a long stay.
CCMWEHaka House Mt Cook is amazing! I stayed in the 8-person female dorm, and my section had 4 beds. I was lucky enough to get a bottom bunk, and in the other section, I was all by myself, which was perfect. There were plenty of bathrooms, and the dining area and kitchen were very spacious. Eating with a view of Mt. Cook outside was incredibly enjoyable!
I'd definitely choose Haka House again if I have the chance. There's also plenty of free parking, which is a huge plus!
NNanny GloI only stayed 1 night, and I'm relatively new to the South Island. I had to catch the intercity bus and was stressing out I would miss my bus, or go to the wrong bus stop. I went to the office, and after a very patient 12ish minutes (on the lady working in receptions part), she understood what I wanted. She was so lovely. I was waiting until 8am to come and say a huge thank you, but my Uber came early. The heater heated the room up nicely, the pressure of the shower was great. The bed was well made and comfortable. I too am a housekeeper/cleaner and really appreciated coming into a nice, clean environment. If I have anything to say as an improvement, it would be to have a better tea towel. A nothing issue and a $2 fix. I absolutely loved my stay at your motel and highly recommend it.
