The following is the copy of an email sent a week ago to Britannia hotels main email address. To date, I have received no response but neither did I expect one. - I'd like to tell you of our experience of staying at the Palace Hotel, Buxton. 13th and 14th September, 2022. On arrival at the hotel one cannot fail to be impressed by this fine old building with fitting décor in the entrance lobby and communal area. Unfortunately, this is where the impressiveness ends. Check in – 3 or 4 stations at the reception desk, only 1 manned. Thankfully we were 2nd in line and on glancing behind us when it was our turn saw about 30 people behind us queuing out of the glass doors and back to the revolving door. No welcome from the receptionist and I was quite surprised that when I asked about using my card for charges to our room for wine etc. was told that you pay as you go. Not quite what you would expect from a 4 star hotel. Booked a table for dinner – we were booking in at 4 pm but the earliest option for a table was 8.30 pm. Our Room – we had booked an executive twin room and whilst the room was spacious it lacked character and was in fact quite sp**** . We understood that there was no room service but assumed this would be for change of towels, little did we know that there would be no emptying of bin or replenishment of tea/coffee/milk and sugar. No guest information folder in the room, which we would expect to find. Dining – dinner. 4 staff ( I won't give them the title of waiter/waitress/hostess as it would be doing a disservice to those who do this role properly) at the desk at the front of the restaurant and given a menu and taken to a table. We were given to understand that meals were buffet style but the comment from the staff member who had taken us to our table who told us it was self service we found her description was more realistic. In actual fact for the help that was given throughout our stay you might as well have trays situated at the front because the service is more akin to a poorly run motorway service station. That again is giving a disservice as there is a far better selection of food on offer there. We asked for wine menu and were told it was in the menu folder, it wasn't. The staff member said she'd get one, took the menu away and neither were seen again. We opted for soup which we had to help ourselves to from an electric soup tureen, after we asked what it was. After one mouthful, found it was lukewarm so took it back to another staff member who took the soup bowls from me saying she'd tell chef. Well, that helped a lot didn't it as neither of these were seen again either! We had to have the pate or salad as these were the only other things on offer as a starter. Back up to the hot cupboards for our main course – on offer, 1 choice of roast - turkey, fish in sauce which looked as though that had been there for the whole of the service time and a sweet potato curry. This was our first visit out to a hotel in a long time. I felt the hotel had made a good attempt to cover all the bases in terms of hygiene. I wish they had said there would be no robes and slippers in the premier room because I wouldn’t of booked it if I had known. However the service was excellent the room was clean, and the food we had in the bar area was really well put together, and I would certainly stay there again. Special mention goes to I think his name was Matt on reception!

I came to stay at your hotel because my mother is sick in a nearby hospital. All I needed was a quiet place to sleep. When I arrived the reception staff couldn’t find my booking. The key card barely worked, having to be swiped at least 10 times to get into the room. The room clearly hadn’t been decorated since the 90s, which meant it lacked modern convinces like a plug socket near the bed to charge my phone, or more importantly air con. I had stupidly assumed being in the 21st century and charging not a small amount of money for the night, these would at least be standard. During the middle of this heatwave it was positively uncomfortable. I think I would have struggled to sleep just with that, but the noise made it pretty impossible. The hotel backs into a major road, as many do. But I have never stayed in one before where it sounded like I was sitting in the middle of the road. It was so load that despite the terrible heat I ended up closing the window. Not that easy as the window handle was missing! This unfortunately didn’t really make it any quieter. When the sleepless night was over I went for a shower to try and revive myself, but the water pressure was so low it was not exactly refreshing. All in all the place needs pulling down and starting again.

Just back from a 2 night stay at this hotel. Arrived around 6pm on the Friday evening. Quick check-in - nice clean room on the second floor. About 5 minutes walk from Derby station. Breakfast was the usual buffet but it was topped up at regular intervals - nice and hot and set us up for the day. Would happily use again in the future.

I have used this place a few times for groups. This time they really fell short. There is no one in charge. Very difficult to speak to a manager. Issues with the restaurant. Short staffed. Food was too salty. Soya sauce based dishes were not edible. No one asked when sent back unfinished if there was an issue. Only robots delivering food and very inexperience staff. Couldn't order more drinks in good time. Breakfast is buffet and is very basic. Ok. It is clean. However, for £250 a room I think that it is overpriced. Thank goodness for Trip.com much better rate 2 days before the event. Baths do not drain. Taps and fittings are loose or not finished properly. Poor customer service overall, despite having 5 rooms in our group and dinner for 10. Said they would call me back. Which they have not. That was after speaking to a man who said that he was not the manager, had only worked there for 8 weeks, yet told me that I was not familiar with the service industries! Such a shame. Will have to find somewhere else next time. Not a hint of a smile or an apology or anything to say that he would feed back. 🤷

I loved this hotel. The decor was tasteful, staff was extremely friendly. Rooms were cosy and clean. Had some drinks and snacks at their bar and the cocktails were really nice. Staff were attentive and polite. The dinner menu in the restaurant was really nice too. Breakfast became busy and I think the staff were struggling to keep up because I had to wait a while before glasses were stocked to get juice and milk was replenished for my tea. My only gripe about the room was lack of electrical sockets near the bedside tables to barge the phones. Would definitely stay here again.

Bed was king size and comfortable. The room and bathroom was clean. We used the restaurant once for dinner and we had 2 breakfasts and the food was nice and reasonable priced. Breakfast was self service (as ours was included) with a good and plentiful variety. The staff were friendly and helpful but professional. We didn’t use the pool in the end as it meant going outside and back inside, as our room was not connected to a covered route to the pool. Nothing really to complain about but we did expect the room to be a bit more luxurious. Slightly overpriced for the room. I expect the price was based on the available amenities.

We had an overnight stay at this hotel. The location is just minutes from the M1. The staff were friendly and helpful. Yes we experienced problems with the key cards but resolved without fuss. Room was clean and beds very comfortable. We didn't experience any noise. There was plenty of tea/coffee and toiletries in the room. The breakfast had plenty of variety and good quality. Car parking just outside. A very good stay at a reasonable price. Can also recommend the Harvester next door. We had a very good meal and the staff were lovely.

Could not do any more for us, Oliver was amazing, had an issue with our Air con, happily sorted within 5 minutes into a different room and even wirh the little issue at 4am in the morning with the aircon making a noise he made sure that everything was spot on and apologised for the issues but we did understand as they are undergoing refurbishment and was prewarned beforehand.

We travelled to Derby to visit family with our 3 year old daughter. We decided for the first tike ever that we would stay in a hotel. We'll We were not disappointed! The rooms were clean and of a good standard, beds comfy and shower was lovely! Staff were very helpful and friendly especially a lady called Denise 🙂. There's a greggs and a garage next door and the carpark if free! Will definitely be returning, thank you!

We came to stay for 1 night for an event at our daughters University. We was not sure what to expect initially but first impressions were ok for the price paid. We only spent around an hour there after a 5 hour drive before heading to the event we came for so we were tired and didn’t check around the room or anything. Upon our return, we noticed that the extractor fan was not working and not switch on any wall to control it then also noticed the screw for the shower rail was loose enough that it is only just hanging on. It was also very warm inside the room but there is no air con or even a fan to speak of so had to sleep with the windows open. The place was also very dusty in obvious places like the light fixings and the top of the mirror etc. And also a lot of mould/mildew around the bath and taps, which when wiped, a lot came off easily. We decided that we were going to report the issues to the staff in the morning. We sadly had very little sleep as the room above us seems to have had very squeaky floors and the occupants were up late and arose early. Before we ever leave a hotel, we always ***** the bed and sheets and put them into the bath for the cleaning staff. This is when we found old blood stains on the quilt and questionable yellow stains on the mattress and mattress protector. I had to come to the conclusion that the cleaning staff are clearly not cleaning to a high enough standard and are rushing through everything. It’s a shame as we cannot warrant staying here again and will look for elsewhere in future. The redeeming factor was the staff who seemed very pleasant and friendly. Although the only staff we did see were inside the pub on arrival and on exit.

Hotel breakfast in general, wins at a cheap price. Very warm. An extra bed can be placed in the room. The hotel has free parking. There is a bar next door, I don’t see other things to sell,

Lovely stay from Thursday to Monday. The hotel was lovely and the staff couldn't be more helpful, in particular Theresa and Jose. The food was excellent with lots of choice. Great swimming pool too. Would highly recommend a stay here with plenty of attractions nearby.

I didn't book the old hall, but this one is really good. The cleanliness and comfort of the room is my most important. The decoration is red classical style. There is a wedding atmosphere under the floor.

Stayed at the Queen's Head hotel over the weekend due to attending a concert at Buxton Opera House. We were really well looked after and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The accommodation was clean , warm and welcoming. Whilst there is no on-site parking, there is parking in the market place only a minutes walk away which was easy to access. Thank you for an enjoyable stay.

An excellent stay in Buxton. We had a room in the grounds. We loved the attention to detail in how the room had been set up. Very comfortable with room to relax in the room, at a sheltered table on a small covered verandah, or outside. Very clean. We enjoyed a superb breakfast with fresh fruit and a great cooked veggie breakfast, with my GF diet no problem. A 15-minute walk downhill into the centre of Buxton. Would highly recommend.
