Tangqi Ancient Town Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
Old town in the north of Hangzhou
#historicplaces I found this old town on Google map three years ago when I moved to Hangzhou. Despite of its remote location, this quaint little town is an interesting blend of traditional Chinese architecture & culture with a touch of modernity. (I was indeed surprised to find a KFC and Starbucks, but it seems to be a trend nowadays). The stone bridge & river are part of the Grand Canal sourcing from Beijing.
While strolling through the streets of the old town, you can find several restaurants, coffee shops and traditional snacks. There are a few handicraft stores where you can buy souvenirs. I also came across a portrait artist along the river. The old town is a living area and is also famous for its loquat season around mid-May.
How to go- Take metro line 9 to Heyu Road. There’s a bus station near exit C in front of McDonald’s. Take 🚌 411 OR Take a 🚕, the ride is about 20-30 mins.

There are countless ancient towns in the south of the Yangtze River, and the ancient town of Tangqi is one of the ancient towns that have to be mentioned. The ancient town of Tangqi has occupied a very important position in the history of the past and present. It originated from the southern end of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. The canal passes through the town and is the waterway of the Soviet Union, Shanghai, Jia, and the lake. Since the dynasties, Tangqi has been the water gateway of Hangzhou. The historical atmosphere of the
ancient town can be seen from the seven-hole Guangji Bridge above the ancient canal. Now the bridge is 78.7 meters long, 5.2 meters wide, 7.75 meters high and 7.6 meters wide. Seven holes, arch vouchers are juxtaposed and juxtaposed, and each of the two slopes has a stone step of 80. The stone slabs are plain, and the two ends of the slab are cirrus clouds. There are 64 pillars in total, and the four corners are covered with lotus. Guangji Changqiao is like Changhong. It has a beautiful shape. After more than 500 years, it still stands on the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. It has become a true witness of the historical vicissitudes. Guangji Bridge is like the Changhong lying wave and the canal. It is the only remaining one on the ancient canal. The seven-hole stone arch bridge is also the largest thin-decked arch bridge on the Grand Canal. Picking up from the bridge, it feels like climbing a mountain. Going to the top of the bridge, you can see the whole picture of the ancient town. Guangji Bridge has now become the image of Lao Yuhang.
Hangzhou Tangqi Ancient Town
🌿 In Linping, Hangzhou, there is an ancient town called Tangqi, which got its name from being situated near a pond. Tangqi Ancient Town spans both sides of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal and has always been the water gateway to Hangzhou.
✅ Since the Yuan Dynasty, Tangqi has been a bustling town with a gathering of merchants, becoming a large town. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was once the richest area around and was known as the 'foremost of the top ten famous towns in the south of the Yangtze River'.
🌈 When we arrived, it was the end of winter and nearing spring, and the weather was still a bit cold.
One must see the Guangji Bridge over the Grand Canal here in Tangqi - the Guangji Bridge in Tangqi Town. The bridge's design is quite beautiful and spectacular. There are also ancient relics such as the Guo Pu Well, the Qianlong Imperial Stele, and the Taishi Di Alley - indeed, it is a southern ancient town.
🌿 There are many alleys in Tangqi Ancient Town, known as 'seventy-two and a half alleys'. The towering firewalls are covered with vines, and the ground is mostly paved with bluestone slabs, quiet and quaint, with wandering thoughts, all the way to the canal side, where the wind is disheveled.
🌿 Along the canal, there are veranda streets and 'Beauty Lean', where the 'Beauty Lean' by the river is a long row of wooden structures, now with red lanterns hanging above.
One can imagine in the misty rain of the south of the Yangtze River, the beautiful silhouette of a woman, the winding long veranda streets that are accessible in every direction, perfect for going out without the hindrance of rain. Feng Zikai once said: 'Jiangnan is a place of beauty, and Tangqi Water Town is one of its representatives.'
✅ A gentle breeze brushes the face, fresh and elegant, returning to tranquility, feeling the tremor of the soul at that moment - this water town is where the soul belongs.
The night view of the free ancient town is also very beautiful~ Hangzhou
Long streets and short alleys, small bridges and rivers, all shrouded in dim and warm light, calmly and contentedly in the atmosphere of simplicity and prosperity~ The night view of Tangqi Ancient Town is extremely beautiful~

A day trip to Jingci Temple in Hangzhou
May the Buddha's light shine and relieve all suffering 🙏
Choice: Sunny weather☀️, bright sunshine, temperature at 20 degrees. Went to Jingci Temple in the afternoon, and no matter when, there are always many people~
Waited in line for 30 minutes, took a bus🚌 to Jingci Temple. If you get motion sickness, it's recommended to sit in the last few rows; I felt quite nauseous from the ride~ People prone to motion sickness should definitely take care of their health.
Walked the ancient Jingci trail, climbed the mountain! Looked into the distance! Super healing!
The whole trail is about 3km, a great place for hiking and climbing in Hangzhou! The scenery along the way is really beautiful and healing. Having lived in Hangzhou for so long, it's been a while since I've seen such spectacular and comfortable scenery~ There are bamboo forests, evergreen trees, and many continuous mountains⛰️~
Regarding incense offerings: The temple is still very popular here, with 3 sticks/person of high incense~ You can use them to make a wish~ You get them with the ticket~
Jingci Temple
Full of Zen, the mountains, water, rocks, and trees are all exceptionally beautiful! It integrates the style of a Zen monastery and a Jiangnan garden, and you can also eat a bowl of vegetarian noodles. The atmosphere for taking photos📷 is really strong~
Seeing passersby throw coins into the fish pond and coins hanging on the walls is truly spectacular~
Vegetarian noodles 22➕8 for a bowl of cold dishes, ate very satisfyingly
In February, the peach blossoms are also blooming~

YOU WOULDN’T GUESS WHAT THIS PLACE IS⁉️
If you ever find yourself around Liang Zhu area, This is definitely a place to see…
It’s pretty far from downtown so I suggest you go early to explore the 3 tourist sites around the area.
🔸The Park 🏕 良渚遗址公园
🔸The Museum 🏛良渚博物馆
🔸 The Center of Arts 🎭 良渚艺术中心
One of my Chinese friends said,
“除了远还是值得去 😄”
Translation: ” Besides the distance, it’s a place worth visiting. ”
I totally agree with that notion.
We explored the Museum.
It was really nice to soak up some ancient history and learn more about that village area.
⚠️And On a side note it’s architecture is also perfect for taking amazing photos 📸 😋

No need to squeeze through crowds, Hangzhou has great weekend destinations
Liangu is really a weekend treasure spot, with many popular attractions, such as the Liangzhu Big Roof, Liangzhu Site Park, National Version Pavilion, and so on💥...
However, the Liangzhu Museum I checked in this time doesn't require squeezing through crowds. This spot won't be too crowded, making it really comfortable to stroll around. The whole visit takes about one or two hours...
Inside, it includes an introduction to the Liangzhu site, a display of exquisite jade cong, and there's also an open-air lounge area shaped like a jade cong, where you can calm down and learn about the Liangzhu culture. It's a good choice for understanding, and also great for taking kids out for some educational fun...
The key point is it's free, free, you can just make a reservation directly, which is very convenient...

The sole location in Hangzhou where one can freely pluck lotus flowers! Less crowded and niche.
The lotus flowers of Liangzhu are simply breathtaking! 🪷🪷🪷
I couldn't resist picking a bunch of them 😆
This is a must-visit for those with itchy fingers‼️
·
You can admire, you can pick, and the prices are clearly marked.
Lotus leaves are 1r, lotus flowers are 2r, and lotus pods are 3r.
Finally, I can indulge in a bit of "low-brow" fun, haha 🤣
·
Apart from picking lotus flowers, the scenery here is also quite lovely.
Thatched cottages, bamboo walkways 🎋, and lotus ponds of endless green.
Walking amidst it all,
It feels like you've wandered deep into a lotus flower paradise 🛶
·
There are very few people on weekdays, it's quite niche.
Taking photos is not awkward at all.
Because you're close to the lotus flowers,
The photos all have a deep-sea-of-flowers feel.
The photo success rate is 💯.
·
If you're tired of the delicate lotus flowers by the West Lake,
Come here to the countryside to admire and pick lotus,
You can also catch crayfish 🦞
It's a different kind of vibe.

A gathering place for artistic youths
Here
✅Occasional themed markets
✅Strut around with pets
✅A good place for walking children and family outings
✅All-in-one destination for eating, drinking, and entertainment
🚏What are the places worth checking out?⬇️
📍One Way Space (The Granary)
They say this beautiful building is Hangzhou's Aranya, but I think it's not anyone else, it's just itself. The floor-to-ceiling windows on both sides, the words above the windows speak to the hearts of artistic youths. Bookstore, coffee, cultural and creative products. Unfortunately, it's not quite possible to read quietly here, there are many, many children, lively and happy
📍The Big Roof
Designed by Tadao Ando. There's always some interesting markets and exhibitions here. I personally like the autumn toy exhibition, where you can find all sorts of fun stuff. Currently, it's the cherry blossom season market, with an entrance fee of 39 yuan. To be honest, it's not really worth it. Mainly because there aren't many stalls, and there are only two rows of cherry blossoms, you can see them for free on the Binjiang track
📍Manner Coffee
The space is super large, with a serene vibe, plenty of sunlight, especially suitable for an afternoon coffee, to nestle here, daydreaming and basking in the sun, not thinking about anything, just daydreaming and sunbathing
📍Mumu
Woodworking is always admirable. It's a manifestation of patience and skill, a combination of aesthetics and steadiness. Here, the color tone is soft, and the pleasant scent of wood hits you. Without looking at the price, you'd want to take everything. After seeing the price, you wish each item finds its rightful place
📍Hang Yi Mo EMoment
A coffee shop with high aesthetic appeal, cute and playful cakes, standard coffee, very photogenic. If these three points are met, it's worth a visit
‼️Tips
🅿️The parking lot will be congested on weekends, and it takes a long time to find a spot
Ⓜ️Take Metro Line 2 to Liangzhu Station, bus 398M to Liangzhu Cultural Village East
Hangzhou's Liangzhu Big Roof, a cement structure, also possesses the charm of the Jiangnan region
Upon exiting the large granary, you will find the renowned Big Roof diagonally opposite, which now houses the Liangzhu Culture and Arts Center.
The famous Japanese designer Tadao Ando, known as the 'Poet of Clean Concrete', designed the Big Roof. Built by the water, it combines strength and softness, endowing the cement structure with the ambiance of the water towns in Jiangnan.
The first floor of the Big Roof hosts a spacious cafe and a cultural and creative goods store, but the highlight here is undoubtedly the library. Unlike the bustling granary bookstore, the Big Roof library exudes tranquility and composure. Before visiting the library, one must make an online reservation, and visitors naturally slow down their pace and lower their voices.
The combination of the fragrance of books with aesthetics and gourmet food has become the latest survival strategy for bookstores. The Big Roof library spans two floors, with over a dozen wooden bookshelves standing tall, bringing an overwhelming sense of happiness from the mountain of books. Standing beneath them, one might feel somewhat insignificant.
This is a public library, and the 50,000 volumes it contains have been carefully selected for their high readability.
Ancient people sought tranquility in reading, while modern people value the atmosphere. Inside the library, the scent of books is serene and peaceful; outside the window, the water in the pond ripples, and the lawn is as lush as a carpet. If you happen to visit in the sunny March, clusters of pink cherry blossoms are in full bloom, how wonderful that would be. Unfortunately, the cherry blossoms come and go in a hurry, and we always miss the chance to meet them.
Some say that Hangzhou is a city that loves reading, with various bookstores scattered throughout the region. Stepping into the Big Roof confirms that this is not an unfounded claim. The first and second floors of the library, along with the small reading room on the side, are filled with readers engrossed in their books. I truly wish I could stay here for a while, to slowly savor the charm of the fragrance of books in this beautiful environment. It's just a pity that our steps are always so hurried.

Hiking to explore Buddha in Jing Mountain
Jing Mountain Temple, established during the Tianbao era of the Tang Dynasty, is an ancient temple that has been around for more than 1200 years. It represents the final peak after the sinicization of Buddhism. Its location is in Jing Mountain, Jing Mountain Town, Yuhang District, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, and it is known as the 'leader of the five major Zen temples in the south of the Yangtze River'.
The main cultural relics of Jing Mountain Temple include the imperial stele of Emperor Xiaozong of Song, three iron Buddhas, bell tower, Yongle big bell, and the stele of ancestors from various dynasties. During the Southern Song Dynasty, it was the most prosperous temple, being the leader of the five major Zen temples in the south of the Yangtze River.
Hiking the most beautiful ancient forest trail in Hangzhou: Jing Mountain Ancient Trail
Jing Mountain, located on the west side of Hangzhou city, Yuhang, and borders Anji, is a famous Buddhist mountain with beautiful scenery, strange peaks, winding mountain roads, lush bamboo forests. Su Shi once left the famous sentence 'All peaks come from Tianmu Mountain, like a galloping horse running across the plain'.
It is the northeast peak of Tianmu Mountain, where ancient trees reach the sky, streams gurgle, mountains overlap, and it is known as 'Three thousand pavilions and five peak rocks'. There are also famous landmarks such as the Bell Tower, Drum Tower, and Longjing Spring, which can be described as beautiful mountains, clear water, and excellent tea.
The Jing Mountain Ancient Trail was built during the Tang Dynasty and has a profound cultural history. It is a unique natural tourist resource of Jing Mountain. In ancient times, the Jing Mountain Ancient Trail was not only an important transportation route, but also a cultural route. It was through it that the Zen tea culture of Jing Mountain went to the world.
The overall difficulty is low, the slope is not steep, and it can be finished quickly. There are also few tourists on the road, and occasionally there will be families or small groups of pedestrians.
Walking in the bamboo sea, listening to the bell ringing, arriving at the ancient temple in the mountains, stepping into the thousand-year-old bell sound, the unique architectural style of Jing Mountain also makes you feel like traveling through the prosperous Tang Dynasty.

Jingshan Temple | Choosing to worship between work and progress
| Choosing to worship between work and progress.🌟Highlights:
1. Jingshan Temple is very effective for career prayers! Personally tested! Everyone can Baidu this temple and its big relationship
2. The entire temple is in Japanese style (actually Japan copied ancient China haha), compared to Lingyin, it is not so internet famous, the ancient road is very comfortable to walk, there is very little commercialization along the way, very quiet.
🚉Travel strategy:
It is about 1.5 hours drive from the city. After arriving at the parking lot, you can transfer to the shuttle bus to go up the mountain (free), or you can walk up along the Jingshan Valley Road. The total ascent is about 500 meters, and it takes about 1h. The ancient road is about 5 kilometers long, with towering mountains on both sides, the scenery is pleasant, and you can observe everything and return to nature.
⏳Play time:
If you choose to walk up and down the mountain, plus sightseeing and worship, it takes about 3-4 hours. We chose to take the shuttle bus up the mountain, walk down the mountain by ourselves, and it took 1 hour to make a wish on the mountain, about 3 hours in total.
📝Note tips:
1. There is a cable car to go up and down the mountain, but the whole journey is actually very short, not very necessary. The entrance to the temple requires a ticket of 30, you can buy it by scanning the code on site.
2. Friends who come to pray for their careers sincerely, it is recommended to Baidu the correct way of worship, after all, it is rare to come once, I wish everyone's wishes come true!
