Details: Make Vietnam's best-known coffees yourself at Local Beans Roastery, a small roastery tucked into a quiet lane off Hoang Hoa Tham Street in Hanoi.
Your host, a Vietnamese barista, starts with the story: how coffee came to Vietnam, how it is grown and roasted, how roast level changes the taste, and how to tell good coffee from a poor cup.
Then you brew, one cup at a time, using phin filters, grinders and pour-over kits:
- Brown coffee: phin coffee with condensed milk
- Egg coffee with whipped yolk foam
- Salt coffee with salted cream
- Coconut coffee
- Pour-over coffee
- Coffee cocktail with house-infused rice wine
You taste each drink as you make it and hear where it comes from. The session ends with a tasting of the roastery's homemade rice wines, and you get digital recipes to take home.
Choose English or Mandarin when you book. Vegetarian and vegan guests are welcome; the vegan option makes five plant-based coffees. Book a pickup option for hotel pickup and drop-off in the Old Quarter, or meet us at the roastery.
