The Palace Museum

The Forbidden City, also known as the Imperial Palace, was the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties, and is also the symbol of ancient China. When you are in the majestic and orderly high walls and deep courtyards, you can truly feel its former glory. ▲The long history has left behind large-scale precious buildings and countless cultural relics, which have also become the main attraction of visiting the Forbidden City today. ▲Classic attractions: The Forbidden City Corner Tower is a polygonal building with a convex plane on all four sides. It is located in Dongcheng District, Beijing. The roof has three layers. The upper layer is a hip roof with vertical and horizontal intersections. It is composed of a gable roof with flowing water on two slopes and a hip roof with four slopes. Because there are nine main ridges on this roof, it is called the Nine-ridge Hall. ▲Sundials are divided into two types according to their installation principle: equatorial and horizontal. The sundial installed using the equatorial principle is called an equatorial sundial. The key points of its production are that it must have a time plate, a latitude arc and a gnomon. When operating, the time plate must be parallel to the equatorial plane of the earth, the gnomon must be in the same direction as the earth's axis, and the shadow cast by the gnomon on the gnomon is the desired time. ▲The Treasure House is located in the Ningshou Palace area. It has a rich collection of treasures, including Buddhist supplies, ornaments, daily utensils, and treasures for appreciation. Among them, the red coral lion about 14 cm high, the Dongzhu court beads about 130 cm long, and the gold "Fengtianzhibao" seal are all rare treasures. ▲The Clock and Watch Museum is located in the Fengxian Hall in the palace. Most of the clocks on display are British products, but there are also clocks from other countries such as France and Switzerland. In addition to the timing function, these clocks are decorated with figures, birds, beasts, flowers, etc., which can also make various different movements. They are very delicately made. Among them, the copper-plated gilded writing clock, the copper-plated gilded enamel gourd-top fishing and woodcutting farming clock, and the copper-plated gilded rotating flower running man rhinoceros carrying clock are very rare.Beijing · 1.7 km from downtown

Badaling Great Wall

10
4.7/5
62.8k reviews
The Badaling Great Wall is renowned as one of the Nine Strategic Passes under heaven, combining majestic cliffs with picturesque greenery to form the most spectacular section of the Ming Dynasty fortifications. Living up to the Chinese saying "He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true hero," this remains the premier choice for most Chinese visitors to experience the Wall. The fortress gate exhibits a trapezoidal shape, narrower on the east and wider on the west, featuring two gate towers. The eastern arch bears the inscription "Juyong Waizhen" (Frontier Town of Juyong), while the western gate displays "Beimen Suoyue" (Key to the Northern Gate). North of the fortress stretches the 12-tower Northern Wall section, while to the south lies the less crowded Southern Wall with 7 watchtowers. If time permits, we recommend exploring the Southern Wall first before tackling the more popular Northern section. ▲Walk Through Six Centuries of Golden History: A Visual Feast of Vermilion Foliage Blanketing the Great Wall ▲ As night descends, the Badaling Great Wall transforms into a gilded dragon winding through shadowed peaks, its illuminated battlements whispering tales of millennia - where imperial splendor meets enduring mystery beneath constellations of golden light. ▲Cloaked in winter's crystalline mantle, the Badaling Great Wall becomes a silver serpent coiled between snow-draped peaks, its ancient stones gilded by dawn's golden raysBeijing · 60.2 km from downtown

Situated in the Haidian District northwest of Beijing, the Summer Palace is a Unesco World Heritage site that used to be the palace and garden of the emperors of the Qing Dynasty. It is the largest and most well preserved royal park in China. Construction of the palace began in 1750 and it served as a residential and entertainment area for the royal members. The palace underwent two major reconstructions after suffering damages during invasions by the Anglo-French Allied Forces and the Eight-Power Allied Forces during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Summer Palace can be divided into three sectors: a political activity area centered at the Hall of Benevolence and Longevity; an empress living area concentrated around the Hall of Jade Billows and Hall of Joy and Longevity; and a tour route concentrated along the long corridor, rear hill, and the west sector.Beijing · 15.4 km from downtown

36.5k reviews
The Mutianyu Great Wall, located in Mutianyu Village, Bohai Town, Huairou District, Beijing, is 73 km from downtown Beijing and enjoys the reputation of "the most spectacular section of the Great Wall." Stretching 5,400 m, it is the longest section of the Great Wall in China and one of the sixteen major attractions in Beijing. Constructed in 1368 during the Ming Dynasty under the supervision of General Xu Da on the ruins of the Northern Qi Dynasty's Great Wall, the Mutianyu section represents the essence of the Ming-era Great Wall. It connects Gubeikou to the east and Juyong Pass to the west, serving as a crucial military stronghold for defending the capital throughout history. Notable features include Zhenguan Tower, Dajiao Tower, and the "Eagle Flies Backward" view. The wall remains well-preserved, showcasing its ancient charm, and holds profound historical and cultural significance. In 1987, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In 2000, the Huairou District government designated it as a scenic area. On May 25, 2006, the Mutianyu Great Wall, along with other sections, was listed as part of the sixth batch of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level by the State Council of China, while also being incorporated into the fifth batch—the Great Wall. In 2011, it was rated as a AAAAA-level tourist attraction by the National Tourism Administration. Bathed in sunlight, it resembles a giant dragon winding through the verdant mountains, exuding a serene yet majestic historical charm. The Mutianyu Great Wall resembles a stone dragon, winding through the mountains adorned with vibrant fall colors, presenting a magnificent historical panorama. Under the cover of night, it resembles a luminous dragon, silently guarding the mountains while emanating a mysterious and solemn aura.Beijing · 60.2 km from downtown

The Kangxi Emperor's inscribed fu stele is particularly renowned, drawing travelers to queue for hours just to catch a glimpse. If interested, you can also detour to Yandai Byway to visit the Great Qing Post Office, which marks the birth of modern postal service in China. You can stamp a few beautifully patterned postmarks as souvenirs at the post office, though you'll need to purchase their postcards first to get the stamps. Rock singer Dou Wei performed at the Shichahai Scenic Area for three years, and it is said that the restaurant Qingyunlou (Shichahai branch) in the Shichahai Scenic Area is now owned by him. Other famous bars include Hutong Sketch and Jiadingfang. Sitting in a bar, watching singers perform, you can almost hear the passion for music from the "Beijing drifters" in their songs. Nearby attractions Shichahai Scenic Area is adjacent to Nanluoguxiang to the east and Beihai Park to the south, with Jingshan Park, the Palace Museum, and Tiananmen Square a bit further south also within easy reach. Typically, visitors explore the Palace Museum or Tiananmen Square during the day and unwind at the bars in Shichahai Scenic Area in the evening. For those who prefer lakeside views over the Palace Museum or Tiananmen Square, combining a visit to Beihai Park with Shichahai Scenic Area is ideal. If shopping and sampling snacks are more appealing, one can head to nearby Nanluoguxiang after exploring Shichahai Scenic Area.Beijing · 4.5 km from downtown

The tour led by Mr. Zhu, a top student from Beijing, was quite thorough and offered a high degree of freedom. Participants could explore on their own beforehand, and the tour staff would even take photos at designated spots. Overall, it was a very good experience.

The Great Wall is magnificent, winding its way up the mountain peaks. The panoramic views from its heights are breathtaking, imbued with a profound sense of history. It's recommended to enter the park early to avoid crowds, wear non-slip sneakers, and bring plenty of water and sunscreen. Some steps are steep; the cable car is an option for the elderly and children. During peak season, queues can be long, but it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

We were incredibly fortunate to have Mr. Wang, our guide at Prince Gong's Mansion, as our tour leader! He possessed an unparalleled knowledge of the mansion's history, architectural feng shui, and the symbolism of its carvings. He didn't fabricate historical facts; his explanations were rigorous yet engaging, captivating both adults and children. His route planning was excellent, flexibly adjusting when there were many people. He was considerate of elderly members, frequently reminding us of meeting points – truly thoughtful and attentive. The two-plus hours of the tour were packed with valuable information, making for a very rewarding experience. If you visit Prince Gong's Mansion, definitely hire Mr. Wang; it elevates the experience to a whole new level. Highly recommended!

We had a great experience visiting the Temple of Heaven. Booking through Trip.com was very easy and convenient. Make sure you have your QR code ready on your phone when you arrive, as this will be scanned for entry. We visited during Golden Week, so it was extremely busy, but the Temple of Heaven was still a beautiful sight and definitely worth visiting. There are plenty of great photo opportunities and the architecture is stunning.I would recommend visiting as early in the day as possible. We were there later in the afternoon, close to sunset, and there was a very long line to enter. Due to the crowds, they were using staggered entry as well as a single flow of people through designated entry and exit points.A useful tip: try entering through the South Gate rather than the East Gate. We found the line at the South Gate was much shorter (pretty much empty), which saved us quite a bit of time during the busy Golden Week period.

We had a really great day at the Mutianyu Great Wall. Everything was well organized, from the transportation from the city and back to the whole tour. Our guide was excellent — very friendly, helpful, and explained everything clearly. We first explored the western section, towers 14–20, and then decided to pay extra for the open two-seater chairlift and the toboggan ride back down. We also chose to visit the eastern section, towers 6–1. It cost around €18 extra per person, but it was definitely worth it and gave us the chance to see even more of the Great Wall.We had around 5 hours of free time to explore, which was perfect. The views and scenery were absolutely amazing.Overall, an excellent experience and really good value for money. We would definitely recommend this tour!

I didn't book in advance and bought an afternoon tea set for over 1000 yuan. Unexpectedly, it included a whole set of tableware worth 500-600 yuan on the market, afternoon tea, and free activities – a truly delightful surprise!

The largest urban park within Beijing's Fourth Ring Road, it's free and incredibly welcoming. With its vast lawns, expansive lake, and stunning European-style architecture and fairytale castle, it's perfect for photos. You can run, boat, take your kids, and visit exhibitions. It's comfortable year-round, and locals often come here to relax.

Shichahai (Qianhai + Houhai + Xihai), located at No. 49 Di'anmen West Street, Xicheng District, Beijing, is divided into three water areas: Qianhai, Houhai, and Xihai. The lakeside scenic area is free all day and requires no reservation. Three main areas: 1) Qianhai (Lively main scenic area, the top choice for watching the sunset) Yandai Xiejie: A 232-meter-long century-old street with creative shops and snacks, leading directly to Yinding Bridge. Yinding Bridge: One of the "Eight Scenic Spots of Yanjing," Yinding Guanshan (Viewing the Mountains from Yinding Bridge), a good spot for sunset photography at Orange Sea in the evening, offering distant views of the Western Hills. Lotus Market: A pond full of lotus flowers in summer, offering opportunities for rowing boats and sightseeing boats. 2) Houhai (Bars + Hutongs, the heart of nightlife) Houhai Bar Street: A cluster of folk music bars, creating a vibrant atmosphere at night; avoid the expensive bars along the street and explore the deeper hutongs for better deals. Houhai North Bank: A quiet lakeside walking path, less crowded, suitable for strolling and taking photos, passing by Prince Chun's Mansion (the birthplace of Puyi). 3) Xihai (a local favorite, the least crowded) Xihai Wetland Park (free): reeds, wild ducks, lakeside boardwalk, a hidden gem in the bustling city, almost no tour groups, perfect for a quiet city walk.
