Hotel Shikisai

Nikko|2.88km from Kegon Falls

Hoshino Resorts KAI Nikko

Nikko|0.53km from Kegon Falls
After 2 nights in the main Nikko area (staying at the spectacular Fufu Nikko), we chose to overnight in Oku-Nikko to tour Kegon Falls and do some hiking in the area. While it was a pleasant stay, Kai Nikko was a massive step down when compared to the fresh, new and luxurious Fufu Nikko. I've previously leveled criticism at various Hoshino resorts in the past, and most of them apply here - decent but not amazing food, the lack of Onsen (natural mineral hot springs) baths in the rooms, a bit of a corporate feel, slow check-in process and a bit too communal of an experience. As was the case with Kai Tsugaru, Hoshino's Nikko property has definitely seen its better days. The exterior is downright unpleasant - it really, really needs a refurbish in the worst way, beginning with a fresh new paint job. And while there are charming touches in terms of interior decor (numerous nooks and crannies featuring an assortment of ikebana, bonsai, figurines, written scrolls, etc.), there's no getting around the property's age, and it even smalls a bit run down as well. To start with - for those of you looking for the classic luxury Onsen ryokan experience, I'll get straight to the point - you should look elsewhere. There are no in-room Onsen baths, even in the top suites (only communal ones are available, as well as one rental Onsen that will be hard to reserve given that it's only one), and Kai Nikko offers Samue (looks like spa pajamas) instead of a Yukata. And the Samue are not at all stylish. We booked the top suite at Kai Nikko - the massive, 170m² lake-view suite (room category ”TK6.”) It was downright cavernous, but the layout was confusing... tons of small rooms with short hallways that was very disorienting to us. It was definitely not the best use space. If they wanted to cater to the luxury demographic with an uncompromising Suite, they really should have allocated some space for an Onsen bath as well as a dining area (with an option to have meals served in the room.) Basically, it was a decently-appointed room that was super sized, but was not attractive or fresh in a way that would have done the top category room justice. Given that we're in the COVID-19 era, we prefer not to partake in communal bathing, so the public Onsen baths were not an option to us. Fortunately, Kai Nikko has one private free-flowing, open-air Onsen bath that you can rent. Unfortunately, it's subject to availability and comes at a cost of 3300 yen (roughly $30 USD.) We were fortunate enough to secure a time slot before dinner, but at full capacity I can't imagine too many people successfully booking a slot, given that the times are spread out by 90 minutes (1 hour of use followed by 30 minutes of cleaning by staff.) The Kaiseki dinner at Kai Nikko was equally underwhelming. While it's ”good” (it's very hard to find a bad meal in Japan, mind you), good is not enough in an industry that offers great meals across the board. Nothing was inedible, but several of the dishes were o

Annex Turtle Hotori-An

Far removed from all the hustle and bustle from the city yet its only 2 hours away. Nikko, just 16.7 miles north of Ustunomiya the capital city of Tochigi Prefecture, is a home to many world heritage site such as legendary Toshogu Shrine. This property is one of a kind and unique. Located 15 minutes drive from Tobu Nikko Station and next to Daiwa River this property has unique blend of tranquility and authentic ryokan experience. The room size is pretty average with the entrance area with a bathroom adjacent to it leading to the living room which can be separated from the entrance area by a fusuma sliding door. The view of Daiwa River and sound of water flowing down the river is like nothing you have experienced before. They also have a first come based private onsen. The view you get from this semi opened air bath combined with relaxing onsen washes away your daily stresses down the drain. Due to the serenity and tranquility, location is not the most ideal. Closest convenience store along with other food option (FYI: most restaurants and diners closes before 6PM) is close to 10 minutes walk via Kokudo 120 leading up to Honcho. However, whether it’s weekend getaways for all Tokyo residents or you’re here for vacation Annex Turtle offers you the upmost relaxation for a reasonable cost.

The staff service is very warm. When you change the hotel, you can send your luggage. The hotel is very quiet in the mountains. It is suitable for staying here for a few days to feel the atmosphere of Japan quietly. There is an open-air hot spring in the house. Don't be too comfortable. Going for a walk below, the winter wind is a bit blown, and the hotel is especially rich in breakfast and dinner, very delicious.

Pension was cosy, clean and well equipped. Bath includes onsen. breakfast and dinner can be arranged with the host for a reasonable charge. It is quite a walk from the bus stop with rather uneven road if you have wheeled luggage. Owner was nice to give us a ride out (at her convenience) to the bus stop. View from room of Mt nantai is lovely and it is convenient to visit the waterfalls...especially yudaki which was the best in my opinion.

We were hosted by an elderly couple, and his family members. They were super cute, friendly and polite. It's like their small family business, ground floor was a western restaurant, second floor onwards were all the guest rooms. They know a bit of English, so the communication wise no issue at all. What we love about this stay is that other than the room with gorgeous lake view, the host was super helpful to allow us to store our luggage with them even way before our check-in timing. Furthermore he even offer to send us to the laundry shop, when we just casually ask him about the laundry. What actually surprised me the most, was that he even FETCH us from the laundry shop after we were done. Will definitely come back to this place again if I'm in Nikko! Thumbs up! Super host!! 😁

Nikko Astraea Hotel

The following three points are good points that we chose this hotel. 1. Another place was extremely hot, but was this resort that we could feel to be cool enough. This hotel is an inn on a plateau that sits quietly in the forest of Okunikko. The trees along the road from Route 120 to the hotel are very beautiful. From such a location, we feel the cool than the temperature difference with the base by the altitude. 2. This hot spring is the emerald green opaque hot water, which is rare in Japan. I uploaded a photo of this hot spring. Please have a look. 3. The staff at this hotel gave us proper advice on hiking in Oku Nikko. The purpose of our trip was a hike to Lake Karikomi, Lake Kirikomi and Karenuma Marsh. We consulted with the hotel staff about this hike. He recommended a course that starts from Yumoto Onsen and descends to Kotoku (Nikko Astraea Hotel). When he advised us, he explicitly said that the course of climbing Sanno Pass from the Kotoku side was not recommended. This Advise was very much thanks . Also, for this course, he concretely taught us that there is a strong climb in the second half from Hinuma to Sanno Pass. This hotel is a large resort hotel. However, the staff, like the owner of the mountain hut, gave very accurate advice. We sincerely thank them.
