When planning our trip to Gulangyu I had a clear objective in mind, I wanted to stay at Lee Manor. So we splurged a little and book at this very charming hotel built in 1920. Service is obviously top notch and we appreciated the little details like the pick up at the ferry with a bottle of refreshing tea, the suggestions for our dinner spot, the complimentary (and gorgeous) afternoon tea. I was impressed by the facilities, the building itself is gorgeous and all the decor elements are beautiful and well thought. Not being able to go back home in Europe for more then 15 months, this place reminded us Italy and it was a a soothing feeling for us both. A full Chinese breakfast is included in the price and there is an option of bread for Westerners. For that price I would have expected (and enjoyed) a cup of coffee but unfortunately I was told that the coffee machine was broken. The hotel is superbly located and the rooms are very comfortable with all the amenities. Our room was on the second floor, in the old building. The poor sound insulation could be a problem though for light sleepers (or if your neighbors are noisy). I could clearly hear the conversation the couple had in the room next door so I would suggest bringing earplugs for a better sleep. We loved our stay on the island and at Lee Manor! Thank you very much for the hospitality!

The service is very good and comfortable. The breakfast is rich. The afternoon tea is amazing. The video route guide is very detailed. The road from the pier is basically flat. I thought it was very far at first, but actually it was okay when I walked down. The butler said to follow the navigation route. It's not easy to walk around; the sound insulation effect of the room is not very good, but that's understandable because it's an old house renovated. Staying one night on Gulangyu Island is really comfortable! ! come back next time!

The balcony room is very good, with good ventilation and lighting. There is an elevator in Building 8. The hygiene is very good and the linen is clean and soft. The pick-up and drop-off service from the pier is great. It leaves on the hour and runs once an hour. There are different routes back and forth. You can even go to places that you can't walk by by car. The big trees in the large yard as soon as you enter the hotel are all decades old, including mango trees, jackfruit trees, phoenix trees, cockscomb trees... It would be very pleasant to cook tea by the fire under the trees without the crowds outside. There is a beach at the back door of the hotel, and sand digging tools can be picked up at the front desk. A few hundred meters outside the gate is Shuzhuang Garden, very close. Let’s talk about areas for improvement. The breakfast noodle soup was tasteless and too bland. It was far inferior to the noodle we had in the Xiamen hotel. I hope some seasonings can be added, such as meat sauce, Laoganma, coriander, etc.

The hotel staff was so welcoming, and made sure to make us feel at home. From the outside, Monet Garden Hotel is a uniquely beautiful historic building that is begging for photos. In the morning you hear the birds in the trees that hang above, while you enjoy breakfast and coffee served to you at garden table. Although outside is surrounded by nature, the inside amenities are modern, comfortable, and clean. With fresh air conditioning if you’ve been out at the beach all day! Sunrise rock and the neighboring beach is only 8 minutes walk from the hotel. That walk is wonderful as you can see other historic Gulangyu buildings. If you go the other direction from the hotel, it’s maybe 5 minutes to the popular food street and shops. Overall a great stay and highly recommended.
