A very pleasant stay at the Pipa Old Inn. A very historical building, though the place is equipped with all necessary modern amenities save for an elevator. Fortunately the staff very helpful assisted us with lugging up our heavy luggage to our room on the 3rd floor. Very beautifully decorated and strategically located in the heart of Datong Ancient City. Very pleasant and helpful staff who helped us plan and arrange our trips around Datong though sadly, they weren't very proficient in English (but that's common in China). Free breakfast was included in our stay and there was a decent spread though the menu didn't change much over our stay there save for one or two vegetable dishes being rotated. Overall definitely worth a return trip and stay in Datong Ancient City.

This is a cosy hotel converted from a scholar’s academy. It really feels like you’ve gone back in time or stepped onto a Chinese drama set. The staff are wonderful, very friendly, helpful and kind, explaining how to navigate their little town and helping us book tickets to a show. When my payment app couldn’t work upon check in, they let us pay later in the day with a credit card. The breakfast is tasty and fills the tummy, and you can ask for refills. I had the best sleep here, as it’s set on a quiet street, a little off the main drag and the rooms were clean and spacious, with comfortable beds, everything worked and there was attention to details like a snack basket and bottled water in the fridge. And the car was there to pick us up from Pingyao Gu Cheng station and also to send us back to the station. It was a lovely stay.

Very nice hotel inside the walls of the Ancient City. Owners didn't speak English but they managed to communicate with translator tools, they picked me and take me back to train station and provided me with good advise on places to visit. Room was warm and clean and decoration was really nice. Thanks so much

This is a great place to stay in Pingyao Ancient City. It's very convenient for getting around, and the owner is really chatty and easy to communicate with. Little sisters who love taking photos can get some great shots in the courtyard!

This place was the best. The owner was incredibly kind, and took great care of me throughout my (sadly) short stay. I got into Datong quite early, and was quite tired. Arriving way before check in, just to drop my bag off, the owner made me some tea, and even some delicious breakfast! I even got a room upgrade, and a free bowl of fruit. They also have a wonderful jade shop downstairs, where they were super helpful! Excellent service, thank you to the owners!!!!

Cosy historical building done up very nicely. Room was well renovated, owner super friendly and very accommodating, we asked for more water, toilet paper, different type of breakfast etc all happy to oblige. 10 minutes walk to light show, 10m walk to center of ancient city where most of the historical sites were. 10m walk to outside where the best food is..DO NOT eat inside the old city, food outside much better. Owner also arranged for car to take us to Wang Family compound and Shuanglian temple at much better price than I could find anywhere online. and private transfer to/from train station as well. Very happy I booked to stay at this location. Breakfast was EXCELLENT

Traveling with two seniors, our family of four found the room to be excellent. When I booked, I expected some differences between the actual room and the online photos, but I was pleasantly surprised that not only was it exactly as pictured, it was even better! It was truly stunning. The heated kang bed at night was a godsend, especially for seniors with back problems or those who dislike overly soft mattresses – it was just the right firmness. The room itself was full of character; for those who love photography, you could take amazing shots without even leaving the room. It was especially stunning at night when the lights were on 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 The owner was also incredibly welcoming. We arrived by high-speed train, and the complimentary pick-up and drop-off saved us so much hassle. We even received complimentary snacks and fruit upon check-in. They provided a map of the ancient town and enthusiastically explained routes and timings, so even if you haven't planned anything, you won't be at a loss for things to do once you've booked your room and arrived. The millet porridge at breakfast definitely deserves a shout-out – it was so good, the seniors loved it. As an extra note, all the restaurants recommended by the owner were delicious and unique, and we even got a discount card! Our meal for four people was nearly 300, and after the discount, we saved over 40. I really didn't expect that in a tourist area. All in all, this accommodation experience was truly fantastic. My trip to Pingyao was pretty perfect this time, especially this hotel. It's definitely the most satisfying and best value-for-money stay I've had. First off, the hotel's location is excellent, right on Yamen Street inside the ancient city, very close to the core attraction, the County Government Office. Other places like Xie Tong Qing and Tong Xing Gong are also not far. Secondly, the hotel blends ancient charm with modern comfort. The overall style is that of an old-fashioned courtyard, with each room having its own small yard. Inside, however, it's modern hotel style. Although my room wasn't huge, it had all the essential facilities, and even featured a wet/dry separation bathroom. Lastly, the price was very reasonable, making it incredibly good value for money! PS: At checkout, the front desk lady even gave me some local Pingyao specialties, which was a lovely surprise!

We went to 4 cities during our trip to China: Shenzhen, Datong, Beijing and Shanghai. This hotel in Datong is by far the best hotel I've ever stayed in. It has everything: clean, modern rooms, friendly and helpful staff and prime location. Seriously, if you plan to come to Datong you have to stay here, your body and mind will thank you. 10/10 stars!

Excellent value for money, spotlessly clean, and the staff provide great service. Breakfast is included, and the location offers very convenient transportation for exploring. In the evenings, it's lovely to stroll out to the square and enjoy the cool air. I wholeheartedly recommend Wutongge Hotel to anyone planning a trip to Datong.
