The Monastery of the Cross (Jvari Church) was built at the end of the 6th century AD. It is the place where Saint Nino first erected a cross when Christianity was introduced to Georgia in the 4th century AD. Lermontov, a great Russian poet, wrote the famous poem "The Child Monk" here. The church houses a portrait of Saint Nino and a huge wooden cross called the Cross of Saint Nino, which attracts a large number of believers to make pilgrimages.
