NNaomi_ioiFor just over 1000 yen, getting a one-night stay with two meals for two people, plus a sea view, is incredible value! The dinner buffet, while not huge, had excellent quality ingredients. We feasted on delicious salmon and tuna. The room was spacious. Sure, there were a few minor imperfections in some corners, but for this price, I can't complain. The only real issue was that the hotel only offers free luggage storage until 3 PM. They didn't mention this when we dropped off our bags. Halfway through our Kumano Kodo hike, a friend behind me delivered the bad news. I ended up having to carry six people's luggage to our next accommodation all by myself. It was quite a heartbreaking experience.

GGuest UserWe had a wonderful two-night stay at Aokishimanoyado Kumanobettei Nakanoshima and thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the experience. Located on a private island, the ryokan is reached by a scenic five-minute boat ride from the harbor, with boats running frequently throughout the day. We also appreciated the complimentary transfer from the local train station, which made our journey very smooth.
The food was excellent, with every meal beautifully prepared and presented. What truly stood out, however, was the exceptional hospitality of the staff. On the morning of my wife’s birthday, they surprised us with two glasses of champagne, a beautiful bouquet of flowers, and a small birthday cake with candles. It was an incredibly thoughtful gesture that made the occasion even more memorable.
The onsen was another highlight of our stay. Set in a stunning natural environment and fed by natural spring water, it provided a truly relaxing and authentic experience.
Aokishimanoyado Kumanobettei Nakanoshima combines outstanding service, beautiful surroundings, and genuine Japanese hospitality. We would happily return and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a special ryokan experience.

GGuest UserThis hotel isn't as dated as some reviews suggest. The lobby and the Nagisakan building (if I remember the name correctly) have both been renovated.
While the new blue walkway isn't super interactive, the hotel itself offers more than enough activities—one day is definitely not enough to experience it all.
First, you can head up to the hiking trail on Mount Noroshi via the Sanjokan building, where you take a massive elevator that reminds me of Chongqing.
Then, you can go on an onsen crawl. Be sure to check out the two main hot springs: Bokido and Gembudo. They rotate between men and women, so the views are different depending on the time; it's great to visit both in the afternoon and during the day.
From Gembudo, you can see sea caves eroded into the rocks across the way.
Sanjokan also has its own private onsen overlooking the Pacific Ocean, which has a distinct charm, though it lacks the rustic wildness of Meishodo.
The rest of the baths are more like nice extras—visiting every single one takes too much time and isn't really necessary.
Also, you probably won't have much energy left to go out for dinner after all the soaking. I recommend reserving a table at the on-site izakaya; it's slightly more expensive than eating outside, but not by much. However, the menu will definitely shock anyone who isn't from the coast. Setting aside the whale meat (since this is a whale-watching area) and dried shark, they actually had dolphin! (Couldn't bring myself to order it as it felt too cruel). Still, the variety of seafood was astonishing.
The hotel also offers fishing, and you're practically guaranteed a catch every time! Sadly, we didn't have time for it since we had to hike the Kumano Kodo the next day.

The 11th-floor onsen offered breathtaking views, and I loved soaking in the beautiful Shirahama sunsets every evening. Ramen shops, convenience stores, and drugstores are all within walking distance. The bus stop is a short walk down to the beach, and all the main attractions are easily accessible from there, which was very convenient. The only downside was the uphill walk, which was quite a struggle when carrying luggage. However, I would definitely choose this hotel again for my next visit.

GGuest UserSuper cozy hotel. Well located right next to the station. It’s a smalll town so everything is within walking distance. Rooms are comfortable and the staff is super friendly. They have English instructions for everything plus can communicate with translate when needed. FYI when checking in they have a phone to call in for help or anything and sometimes the person there only speaks Japanese so may take a minute to communicate stuff through there. Still highly recommend them!

GGuest UserThis is the best hotel experience! It's perched on a hilltop in Kushimoto, and the lobby offers an unbeatable ocean view. You absolutely have to choose the one-meal-two-stay package; the buffet dinner runs until 9 PM, which is perfect for a satisfying meal after a day of sightseeing. They have a great selection, including tuna sashimi, a special tea-rice dish, Western cuisine, and more – definitely a top-notch buffet.
My favorite part was the public bath. There's an outdoor section with sea views, which is incredibly relaxing. The waiting area is spacious and even has free ice cream bars, which the kids absolutely loved.
The most relaxing aspect was the happy hour in the lobby, with unlimited beer, wine, sparkling drinks, and snacks. You can just sit back and enjoy the blissful ocean views.
The only downside: there was a strong musty smell, especially noticeable and persistent when it rained.

The room wasn't small, and even though it was facing the road, it was incredibly quiet at night. The sea breeze was so pleasant! Shirahama is a lot of fun, and I'll definitely stay at Key 1 again next time! The location is super convenient; it's easy to walk to everything nearby. I even walked to the local beer factory for a refreshing pint – fantastic!

ZZhuningningThe room was lovely, with a Japanese style. I booked this guesthouse for two nights because I was planning to hike the Kumano Kodo Chuhero route. The owner was very welcoming and attentive. The guesthouse had onsen facilities and offered restaurant reservations, but I was too tired to eat after the hike. There was a bus stop right outside the guesthouse, making it convenient to go to Chikaro-oji, Kyogawa, and Oguchi.
