Van Gogh Grand Exhibition: Our Entire Collection. View 88 authentic Van Gogh works at the Kröller-Müller Museum in the Netherlands. This year’s most significant modern art exhibition in Europe is taking place—surprisingly—within a Dutch forest. Located in Hoge Veluwe National Park, the Kröller-Müller Museum houses the world's second-largest collection of Van Gogh’s work, surpassed only by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. From September 15, 2026, to January 3, 2027, the museum is hosting "Van Gogh: All Our Paintings," bringing together all 88 of its Van Gogh oil paintings across four galleries—an event occurring for the first time in over forty years. This collection is the result of one of art history’s most astute investments. Museum founder Helene Kröller-Müller began acquiring authentic works on a large scale long before Van Gogh achieved his current renown; she ultimately amassed 88 oil paintings and over 180 works on paper, effectively placing a bet decades in advance on the artist who would become one of the most expensive and beloved figures in modern art.Authentic Van Gogh works are rare worldwide; the National Gallery in London’s sensational 2024 exhibition featured 47 oil paintings, with tickets in high demand. Due to constraints regarding gallery space, loans, and conservation, the Kröller-Müller Museum typically displays only about half of these 88 paintings at any one time; this comprehensive showcase of their entire holdings stands as one of Europe's most important exhibitions of the year.Among the 88 works are world-class masterpieces, such as the 1888 painting *Café Terrace at Night* (pictured in the center of Image 3). Rather than using black to depict the night, Van Gogh created one of art history’s most famous nocturnal scenes by contrasting the deep blue sky with the intense yellows and oranges cast by gaslight. *Road with Cypress and Star* (1890; see Fig. 5) belongs to the final phase of Van Gogh’s career: a towering cypress surges toward the sky like a flame, while the road, pedestrians, crescent moon, and stars swirl around it—a work that transcends mere landscape painting to use nature as a vehicle for expressing the inner spiritual world.Other masterpieces on display include *The Bridge at Arles* (1888), *Four Withered Sunflowers* (1887), *The Sower* (1888), *Self-Portrait* (1887), *At Eternity's Gate* (1890), and *Wheat Field with Reaper and Sun* (1889). Any one of these works would serve as the centerpiece of a Van Gogh gallery in a world-class museum.Perhaps the most noteworthy piece in this exhibition is the lesser-known *Falling Leaves* (1888; see Fig. 9), painted in Arles and depicting the scenery near the ancient Roman necropolis of Alyscamps. The composition employs an unusually high vantage point—rendering the horizon almost invisible—with three massive tree trunks rising from an orange-red ground, while human figures are compressed between the trees and the vibrant colors. This composition clearly reflects Van Gogh’s fascination with Japanese *ukiyo-e* prints. Although the three tree trunks appear a striking blue today, research reveals they were originally closer to purple; the red pigment faded over time, resulting in their current appearance. The painting’s relative obscurity stems from the fact that it has not been publicly exhibited for over two decades—meaning an entire generation has never seen it—and it will return to storage once this exhibition concludes.Viewing these 88 works together offers a clear view of Van Gogh’s artistic journey: from the somber, dark depictions of peasants during his Dutch period to the sudden burst of color in Paris; from the blazing yellows and blues of Arles and the swirling, restless nature of Saint-Rémy to the increasingly liberated brushwork of his final days. The evolution of a great painter is laid out in its entirety across four galleries—a truly breathtaking experience.
