I have never been a very confident gardener but the courses I have done have provided me with such a wealth of information and expertise that I now feel encouraged to give things a go. Lorna, Wantage "Very interesting and supportive. It has given me the confidence to research and try things I hadn't thought about before. Thank you Rachael" Sarah, Berkshire "Urban Design OBU benefited greatly from a workshop on urban food production using the UFP toolkit by Rachel Hammond of Edge landscaping. The students managed to develop a masterplan for a global city site measuring the productivity of their designs, management issues as well as understanding the social and environmental benefits of UFP. The workshops are compelling and effective for valuing UFP." Regina L. Oxford Brookes University About the Tutors Rachel is a Landscape Architect & Urban Designer specialising in regenerative food production. She designs spaces for food, soil health and wildlife and biodiversity, as well as maximising harvests and reducing the work needed to achieve it. She learnt to grow food from her Grandparents in Jersey who grew much of their own produce on their acre - including Jersey Royal Potatoes! Rachel still loves potatoes. Growing food all her life, and commercially for the last 10 years, Rachel has worked with CSA, farms, market gardens, urban farms, community gardens and corporate businesses to increase food production and efficiency, whilst reducing labour and costs. Georgina is an education expert who runs our school and family sessions as well as building our ponds and bog gardens for us. She is a specialist in song birds and wild mushrooms. Rachel founded edge, a non-profit design agency, with the main aims of designing urban food production systems, growing food within whole ecosystems and educating others on food production systems and ecological farming practices. Habitat creation, creative maintenance and ecology at Hilldrop | The Grass Roof Co

Habitat creation, creative maintenance and ecology at Hilldrop | The Grass Roof Co

Jul 18, 2026 (UTC+1)
Horndon on the Hill
Cultural Experiences
A day learning about ecology, habitat creation and creative maintenance with John Little, Benny Hawksbee and ecologist Andy Phillips. A day at Hilldrop learning about ecology, habitat creation and creative maintenance focussing on topography, waste substrates, dead material and structure (natural and human-created), without losing the joy of the garden and of gardening This day aims to help you understand that human disturbance is not only useful but often essential in driving biodiversity, if done with some basic principles and a respect for the existing ecology. We need to value horticulturally managed landscapes the same way we value landscapes that are predominantly managed by agriculture. Within these gardens and green spaces, gardeners are the creative drivers of change, generating cycles of renewal, creating physical, structural and biological diversity. Benny and Andy Phillips will talk through how we, as gardeners, can ID and most importantly record and share the wildlife while we work. They will bring to life the small things in our gardens. You’ll be amazed what is there when you know how and where to look. And once you understand the fauna in the garden, you can understand the changes you can make to boost the diversity of species. This is also an excellent opportunity to see Benny running around with his net. A vital workshop for anyone who gardens. We will have coffee and tea at around 9.30 and the workshop starts at 10.00. A delicious vegetarian lunch cooked on site by Fiona is provided at 1pm. Please let us know if you have any allergies or food intolerances. Parking is available on site. Nearest train station is Laindon and there is a mini-cab service there which can take you the short distance to Hilldrop. Information Source: Care Not Capital | eventbrite
