Come and join local Living History enthusiast Heather as she brings to life crafts from the North West's Heritage. Come and join local Living History enthusiast Heather as she brings to life crafts from the Northwest's Heritage. Demonstrating the slowly vanishing skills that went into producing our clothing using natural materials. This month's session focuses on Making a Summer Hat Using Natural Materials Status: Critically Endangered Blackpool Donkeys would be nothing without the iconic straw hat. Once a bustling industry, (when no respectable person of any age headed outside without a head covering), summer boaters and fashionable fascinators were once a practical and fashionable staple accessory across the UK. What was everyday and commonplace is now becoming more difficult to source in natural materials. Traditional hat-making didn't just use straw, you could use reeds, rushes or local grasses to keep the glaring sun out of your eyes. Often seen in medieval manuscripts, it is believed this everyday item could be older and even prehistoric in origin. If you look after a hat, it can last you many years. Heather will show you how to create a new straw hat that will keep the sun out of your eyes and the wind out of your hair in the years ahead. Inspired by Heritage Crafts Red List, we’re focusing on endangered crafts. To see the full list of crafts please visit our website ACCESS & VENUE Access: If you have additional access needs (e.g. large print, BSL interpreter, level access) Please let us know by emailing or sending us an SMS text/WhatsApp message on 07957 602790‬ These sessions are in our upstairs workshop space. There is currently no level access. It’s a single flight of 14 steps then you go around the corner and there are two small steps. Once you’re upstairs there’s a loo. You shouldn’t need to come downstairs for anything until the end of the event. If you can’t manage the stairs but really want to attend, please let us know by emailing (using the contact organiser button/link) or sending us an SMS text/WhatsApp message on 07957 602790 and will try our best to accommodate. Getting here Tram to North Pier Bus: No 6 or 18 bus to Topping St. No 3, 3a, 5c, 6, 18 to Church St (Stanley Buildings) No 5, 5a, 5b, 6, 7a, 14 to Talbot Rd Driving: The closest pay and display car parks are on East Topping St and Talbot Road multi storey. Come and join local Living History enthusiast Heather as she brings to life crafts from the Northwest's Heritage. Demonstrating the slowly vanishing skills that went into producing our clothing using natural materials. This month's session focuses on Coiled Straw Baskets (Skep making) Status: Critically Endangered Basketry can be a hard skill to master, especially if you have low mobility in your hands, however this session will provide an accessible introduction to basketry techniques for all. We’ll focus on the ancient craft of making a coiled straw basket. This is a lovely basket style that you can be confident you can keep for daily or decorative use or put to work in the garden as a skep (hive) for the bees. Coiled lipwork baskets were a traditional craft for the North West as we had plenty of grasses. A quick style that could give you a berry gathering, flower picking vessel for the forager who has just realised there is something to collect and they have left their bags at home. Cultural Experiences
Join us for a fun Charity Football Game at Morecambe FC in support of St John's Hospice. Experience what its really like out on the pitch! This is an inclusive event for adults of all ages, gender and ability. Book to play for a minimum of 20 minutes and pay as much as you want (minimum donation of £20 plus booking fee*). If you want more time on the pitch then just make more bookings! And if you want a break between bookings on the day, just ask for this. Alternatively, we will put you on for back-to-back periods of time. Every player will be given to either the Red or White team – please arrange to bring your own kit in the colour of your given team. Brief Rules of the Game No offside No tackling Each player must pass within 5 touches of the ball The rules are designed to make sure there is a minimal risk of injury, everyone gets to take part in some way, the emphasis is not on who is the quickest or best at running with the ball. Everyone can enjoy the experience in a mixed group of capabilities. Please involve as many of your teammates in the game as possible, regardless of skill and ability. It’s all about taking part and enjoying the experience – whilst raising lots of money for our beloved Hospice. Bring your family and friends along to watch - a minimum donation of £3 is requested per spectator but please give as much as you can afford. Accompanied children under 16 years of age will be allowed free access but please ensure they are supervised at all times. Experience what it’s really like to step out onto the Morecambe pitch as a player and take part in a match in front of a crowd! Or arrange a voucher for a friend or family member to take part! Want to book as a team? No problem, either: Nominate someone to book a ticket and pay the minimum donation for everyone (it will be in multiples of £20 - or more if you're feeling generous) then email us (football@wrightandlord.com) with all the team players names and the positions they would like to play and we will make sure you're all playing together on the day. OR Get everyone to pay separately on this page and nominate someone to let us know by email (football@wrightandlord.com) who the players are and the positions they would like to play, then we can look out for them when they book their place. OR Email us (football@wrightandlord.com) if you get stuck! Want longer than 20 minutes on the pitch? Brilliant! Just donate in multiples of £20 how many slots of 20 minutes you would like to stay on for. So £60 would mean that you would stay on for 1 hour. If you want to split that up through the day then email us (football@wrightandlord.com) Don't miss out on this exciting event combining the love of football with supporting a local charity. See you there! Gift Aid St John's Hospice would be able to claim Gift Aid on any donation amount over £20 per slot. So if you paid £25, then £5 would be eligible for Gift Aid. Gift Aid enables you to boost your donation by 25p of Gift Aid for every £1 you donate. Gift Aid is reclaimed by the charity from the tax you pay for the current tax year. Your address is needed to identify you as a current UK taxpayer. *By paying the booking fee, you are ensuring that all of your donation goes directly to St John's Hospice.
