Annual World Whale Day | Maui County

Annual World Whale Day | Maui County

Feb 9–Feb 15, 2026 (UTC-10)
Maui County
Celebration
World Whale Day is observed annually on the third Sunday of February, which falls on February 15th this year. This day honors these vital aquatic creatures that are crucial to the ecosystem. It also highlights the challenges posed to marine life by human activities, such as ocean dumping and climate change, all of which threaten the survival of marine life. Our blue oceans are home to many fascinating creatures, which have been hunted for centuries for various reasons. Today, they face the challenge of habitat loss. To commemorate this, World Whale Day was established in 1980 on the island of Maui, Hawaii, to honor the humpback whales that once roamed the waters off the coast of this tropical island. The day originated from the idea of Greg Kaufman, founder of the Pacific Whale Foundation, who hoped to raise awareness of the threat of humpback whale extinction. Since then, whales have become a highlight of the Maui Whale Festival. This free event attracts large crowds to watch the parade of floats and costumed figures. Children's activities are also held during the festival, and musical performances by Hawaiian and international stars are featured.
