Palmar Beach Lodge

Palmar Beach Lodge ★★★

📍 Red Frog Beach, Bastimento

"We are a family of 6 - kids are 23, 20, 17 and 13. We had the 3 bedroom villa for our 4 kids which had great space our family together and a kitchen for snacks. My husband and I had the ocean King bungalow. We all thought the accommodations were wonderful. This hotel started as a hostel, and has tents and dorms but has also added more upscale accommodations and a beautiful ocean front restaurant with a pool on top. We ate every breakfast at Palmar (included with our stay) and ate 4 out of 5 dinners there - the serve staff was wonderful so kind and did there best to accommodate any request- special shoutout to Gregory who took great care of our family and made sure our table was reserved every night. And the food was delicious and beautifully presented - entrees were $18-$25. Yoga every morning - also right next door to naycho mommas where we ate lunch several times. We also did the trek to Polo Beach it was remote and gorgeous clear calm waters. The pool was under maintenance so Palmar offered us the ability to go to Red Frog Beach Resort Beach Club so we had a pool - such a great option - we ate lunch there and it was not as good as Palmar. We also did a Star Fish Beach tour through Palmar that was fun. We had a wonderful stay and highly recommend!"

📍 Bastimentos Island, Bastimento

"Breakfast and staff was very good, friendly and helpful. Room was clean. Diner was fine but spring rolls way too greasy. The slats of the door were broken and did not close. This allowed everyone to look inside. That was worthless because the room was at the passage that everyone walked past We had to pay extra for the cocktails even though we were told we'd get two for the price of one, not two of the same. She only mentioned this afterward. It's a shame you only find out about this when you pay. Happy hour isn't explained on the menu."

Akwaba Lodge

Akwaba Lodge ★★★★

📍 isla solarte, Bastimento

"I really wanted to love this place because the property itself is absolutely beautiful. The grounds are filled with lush trees, and there are birds all around, which makes the environment feel peaceful and relaxing. The owners also provide snorkeling equipment and kayaks, which is a great touch and adds to the experience. However, there were several fundamental issues that made our stay very uncomfortable and disappointing. First, the cabin we booked was advertised as a water/oceanfront view. Unfortunately, the view was completely blocked by palm trees, and the ocean was not visible at all. We essentially paid extra for a view that did not exist. When I reached out to the owners, I was told that another cabin (which actually had the proper ocean view) could not be cleaned in time and was already reserved for the following day. What made this more frustrating was that the cabin was sitting empty at the time, yet no effort was made to prepare it for us. While I understand they mentioned having issues with their washing machine, that should not impact a guest receiving what they specifically paid for—especially when a solution was clearly available. Beyond that, other issues continued throughout our stay: • Towels were only changed once during our 3-night stay, and only two towels were provided. • There is no air conditioning (which I acknowledge I should have noticed beforehand, but worth mentioning for future guests). • The cabins do not have glass windows—only screens—and some of those screens were broken, allowing insects inside. The most concerning issue, and ultimately the reason for this review, was that the cabin was infested with roaches. We encountered roaches in every area of the cabin—on the couch, in the bedroom, on the walls, in the bathroom, and even coming out from under our luggage. At one point, my husband saw one crawling next to him while he was lying on the couch. It was constant and extremely uncomfortable. We attempted to contact ******* to change accommodations, but due to the late hour (around midnight) and the remote location in Bocas del Toro—accessible only by boat—we had no safe or practical option to leave that night. I do want to note that the owners seem like kind people. I saw them helping other guests with transportation and recommendations, and they appeared friendly and well-intentioned. However, when it came to handling our situation, there was a lack of urgency, accountability, and basic customer service. We did not receive an apology for the roach issue, despite them being notified. I rarely leave negative reviews, but I felt it was important to share this experience. With better attention to cleanliness, maintenance, and guest service—especially when issues arise—this property has the potential to be truly amazing."

"We loved our stay in Akwaba Lodge! Natali and JC are fantastic hosts and it really is a family affair! We ate well, slept well and enjoyed the wonderful surroundings including the delights of Red Frog Beach, Isla Zapatillas and many more spots! Nothing was too much trouble for the team there, to help us make a memorable stay for our family. The lashing rain on the way back to catch the plane was memorable, laughable and made for that extra layer of goodness :-). Thanks again to all for a wonderful nature, food and fun filled time."

"The perfect escape in paradise! The owner (Robert and his wife Maile) contacted us immediately after booking with helpful instructions, which made us feel very welcome. Upon arrival into Bocas del Toro, Robert’s helpful boat aide (Rodolfo) picked us up and escorted us to the premises with a beautiful ride on the water. We were upgraded free of charge and the villa was absolutely incredible - amazing views, spacious, clean and furnished to a high standard. Robert gave us a guided tour of the grounds and WiFi is strong throughout, then at dinner we were blown away by away with the sublime food in our 3-course meals. I would highly recommend this stay!"

Al Natural Resort ★★
"Staying at this place for four nights was one of the highlights of our trip in Panama. It is one of those special places where just comes together, the food, the vibe, the natural beauty. The owner Michele has created a truly unique place – one that he describes as laid-back quality. The rooms are traditional island style with grass roofs. They arespacious and comfortable and beautiful, but what really makes him special is that the front is open to the air and right on the beach so that you fall asleep to the sound of the waves and can look up at the brilliantly starry sky. When we were there, there was a very small group and almost immediately, it felt as if we were like family, talking about life and travels and politics and just about everything. There were activities to do every day, including snorkeling on the most beautiful thriving reef. I have ever been to with sea sponges and sea anemones in all kinds of brilliant colors. Even without the beautiful fish – and there were many— The reef itself was spectacular and made me realize that all the reefs I’ve seen in my life were half dead. And then there was some food – the chef is Belgian like the owner and the meals were gourmet level. Fresh seafood, creatively done. My husband and I could not believe our luck in finding this place."
