Play and stay visit . We stayed in a pirate suite and I must say it was a really nice room , clean and spacious , quiet and a great little club house (bar) . We payed for the birthday package and sweet bouquet. There where birthday banners,balloons and a gullivers bear in the room along with the sweetie bouquet all went down well and then shortly after checking in gully and pirate came to see us with a birthday cake we had a dance and took some photos. The entertainment in thr evening was good . Tom did a great job at entertaining the kids making sure no one was left out and everyone got Involved. Drinks where reasonably priced and can't comment on food as we ate out . Sausages and bacon at breakfast didn't look great so we decided to drive down the road, park doesn't open till 10:30 on a Sunday and you have to check out at 10 anyway so had some time to waste. Great birthday stay value for money and both Tom and Hannah where wonderful making sure we had a great stay and my daughter enjoyed her birthday. Yes I would return . To note: in the evening marshmallow toasting is part of the entertainment but they fail to mention that its £4 for a bag of marshmallows I'd bring your own x 😉

Booked this to meet friends, we live in the North West and they live in the south so this was round about in the middle between us. It was an ideal location for what we wanted (a chilled night with good food and drinks). Situated in a service station with plenty of facilities (coffee shop which serves lovely coffee, a pub the cherry tree, which was great for drinks and a kfc ) the location was pretty perfect. For a 2* budget hotel it did what I expected. The room was clean and basic. There wasn’t coffee/tea making facilities in the room but 24/7 drink making facilities in reception are available. Ok the reason why I’ve given 3/5 the best was so uncomfortable I struggled to sleep. My husband wanted to stay out to watch the end of the boxing but I went back to hotel I had to stay awake to let him in because we were only issued with one key card (standard apparently ). So I had to stay awake to let him in the room. My husband attempted to get a beer on return, from the hotel bar but was told he couldn’t drink it in the bar area because the night staff had cleaned already. The staff on the door were rude to my husband when he tried to get back in because he was a little stupid and couldn’t work out how to get back in (after coming in and going back out to the car passing and saying hello to the staff ). It required the scanning of the door with your hotel key card but reception staff are also able to let patrons in from the inside (I think it was slightly inconvenient). These issues didn’t ruin our stay - we had a great time, but warranted the 3/5 in my opinion

The room is spacious, the second floor is a room and a living room, the hall is covered with a sofa bed, the room has a big bed, comfortable, the waiter is very friendly, the breakfast is rich, there is a sauna room, slightly insufficient, the door lock is a bit difficult to open

Afternoon tea booked on Groupon. Greeted at the door by a friendly smile from Ronald who knew us bt name from booking. We were shown to our table, also it was a hot day so a fan was placed by our table. We were so grateful that our little dog was allowed to be with us too, bonus. Selection of sandwiches on Brown and White, homemade Chocolate, Carrot cake with scones, jam and fresh cream Eton Strawberry dessert. 2 pits of tea , mine was green tea . Tea was topped up when needed. We were offered foil to take home anything we didn't eat which we did use. I know people say this place needs a refurbishment and tidy which I understand but it's a fabulous 1777 old hotel with many features, and all staff are so friendly and nothing too much trouble Even Carlos the chef came and had a chat with us, explaining how they want to increase their footfall and show how good their food and service can be.So for us because the food was fresh, homemade, tasty I believe they need support from the locals and new customers to promote their business then hopefully they can use this to help with any updating etc, but we all know how hard it is to keep small businesses a float in these hard time. The hotel is ideally situated outside hustle and bustle of Matlock Spa. The food was absolutely delicious - well done chef and kitchen crew. The attentiveness and friendliness of the staff was excellent - we were made very comfortable and welcome. The massage my husband and I had was of very high quality and much needed. The spa area is very small and cramped - I wonder if there are any plans to extend ? The outdoor naturally heated pool a delight - our first experience of this which we thoroughly appreciated. Again everyone around the pool were friendly and encouraging. But oh dear …. The hotel buildings themselves need millions investing in them to bring them up to scratch as a spa venue … and I suppose the money just isn’t there, which is such a shame - as in its prime I bet it was a real destination venue. So go - enjoy it for what it is. Laugh at mismatched head boards, bolt on wardrobes, out of date signage in bathrooms, skew pictures and mirrors, radiators hanging off walls, rotten wood, peeling paint. If someone has spare millions - please invest in this place 😉

Enjoyed a wonderful relaxing Xmas break at the Boars Head. Nice big comfortable bedroom with king size plus bed. The food was exceptional throughout and the service provided by Gabby and her team was top class, with breakfast in particular very acceptable Plenty of space to play scrabble warmed by log fires in the lounges, ample parking and great location to travel by car. Yes we extended our stay by one night as we enjoyed the stay so much. Booked again in March for the wife`s birthday and really looking forward to a return visit.
