Renaissance Hamburg Hotel

Stayed there three nights earlier this week. Nice central location, clean and spacious room, good food, friendly reception people, but..... In short, when reserving online, I wrote just one thing in the 'special requests' section, and that was ”As quiet a room as possible please.” I suppose the best and most truthful possible answer to this would have been, ”Sorry, that just won't be possible at the moment because there is loud construction noise all day long, starting at 7 a.m.. We have reserved a room for you at the nearby Marriott instead.” That is of course not what happened. This situation may of course not be entirely the case for every single room. A receptionist told us there were three separate construction projects happening and each affected a different part of the hotel. (None are in the hotel itself.) We had room 524, which is next to a fire escape stairway. I suspect the construction in question was below the bottom of the stairway as the noise seemed to come mainly from there. On Monday morning the jackhammers started at 8 a.m., On Tuesday they started at 7:30 and on Wednesday at 7 a.m. Yesterday (Wednesday), we came back in the middle of the day, hoping for a short nap as the workers took their lunch break, which they did at 12:15. No luck. The hotel ran a pre-announced test of the fire alarm on our floor at 12:35. It rang 8 times. The construction work restarted just after 1 p.m. I measured it at a constant 50 dB using an app on my phone. I feel quite strongly that the rooms in the areas most affected by the construction noise should not be on sale at all. If not, there should be a warning on the website that it will be noisy, advising prospective guests that they should really choose somewhere else for the time being. Yes, I realize that would be a tough decision, but you are putting your reputation on the line at the moment, and the current message seems to be that you don't care.

Boston Hotel HH
4.3/548 Reviews
The hotel is clean and comfortable. Room was unusually large. Unfortunately there was no air conditioning which meant my room was like an oven. The staff kindly made available a large fan. Much appreciated. Breakfast was very nicely presented with a good choice but no fresh machine coffee was a shame. Lovely fresh orange juice. But... When I checked in I had distinctly said I needed to check out 1 day early. In clear German. No possibility of them not understanding this. When I tried to pay my bill the night before I was told I would have to pay the full amount. I was met with 4 members of staff talking at me telling me I was wrong. Well Boston Hotel. You are wrong! I confirmed with my booking agent (at midnight!) that I did indeed have a flexible booking and I am permitted to check out early. I had given 2 days notice. My booking agent will now be escalating this matter. I am looking forward to their response. I refuse to be intimidated into paying for something I have not had! After 30min of discussion and disagreement I was told to sleep on it and speak with the manager the next morning. I did this and was told again that I would have to pay the full amount. I knew I was in the right so I rang the police for advice who were excellent. They told me not to pay for something I have not received. I took the policeman's name and number. I informed reception that I will pay for the days I have been present and no more. Eventually the hotel agreed. I had been prepared to walk out without paying because they were making every excuse under the sun to force me to pay the full amount. The police said not paying would be ok provided I leave my details. But it would be a civil matter if I do not pay but I must leave my contact details. I was prepared to do this. Appreciate the friendliness of the young man at reception in comparison to the others! An exception. Of course, it is unlikely I will return to this hotel. Nevertheless, this is most likely an unfortunate individual experience. The hotel is nice, modern, comfortable and clean. Apart from the check out fiasco I would still recommend this hotel. Albeit extremely hot in summer! Be careful if you also need to check out early!
Ibis Budget Hamburg St Pauli Messe
3.5/520 Reviews
Less than 2min from tube station St Pauli and two blocks away from the world famous Reeperbahn, this Ibis Budget is great for all kinds of guests: those on business and who need only a bed and breakfast the next day, those who'll spend the day wandering around the city, among others. The standard is the very same all over the world, so no complaints abou the size of the room and not having this and that are accepted or fair. Being Hamburg a tourist magnet, the price is far too high for a standard IB, especially in the summer, when it can cost as much as a Mercure or even a Pullman elsewhere. Breakfast is basic but you find something to start the day with. The staff could perhaps be friendlier, tough the blond lady heading the reception is sweet for all of them.
Premier Inn Hamburg City Millerntor

In the holliday inn, the rooms are too small, the rooms are too small, and the hotel is next to the red light district, going south and west are the red light districts, there are more drunken people in the evening and early morning, and the public security situation is average.

Very nice hotel with a perfect location in St Pauli just a street from Reeperbahn. It gives you a nice B&B-feeling. The room we got was quite small but otherwize comfortable with nice beds. Didn't like the pillows which were too thin. Very calm area. Good breakfast and worth the price. Walking distance to most places we wanted to visit.
St.Joseph Hotel Hamburg - Reeperbahn St.Pauli Kiez

Clean and modern hotel in the middle of the Great Freedom, over the Safari. Freshly renovated. Our room goes out to the street, on the 4th floor. There is hardly the window to listen, we can't hear anything from below - great! The staff is very friendly and helpful. Breakfast has a high selection, but not suitable for Vegans. The beds are fantastic and sufficient parking (at charge). From 18:00 a.m. you can't leave the parking lot. Then better park in the deep garage. Many guests from the Baltic room.
Hotel West

The worst reception staff I have encountered in my life (and I travel for work and live in hotel most of the year). I am referring to the old grumpy man, whose name I couldn't get to know. So firstly, the check in. The receptionist did not seem very greeting. But the shady stuff starts happening once I pay for my stay. I pay in cash and he tries to keep 10 euros from the change to himself thinking I won't notice, but luckily I know basic math. He didn't seem apologetic or too happy to give me the right amount too 😁. Secondly, the room. I expected this to be a no thrills type of place, but I found it ridiculous how when I booked a double room for 2 people, only one bed was ready and had sheets on it while the other one was completely bare (in Germany they usually have 2 single beds next to each other as a double bed). During my stay I was also asked by the receptionist if he can call the booking company and tell them I canceled my stay and if they ask me that confirm it, but since I already paid I can continue staying as normal. I found that awfully weird and shady and of course said no since why would I do that. And the worst of all was when I had my friend come stay with me (mind you I booked and payed for 2 people to stay). The receptionist asked him to pay another 20 euros in Cash when he arrived. And when I was told this I was really not ok with this and went down to show that I booked a 2 person stay and already paid everything. The reception at first started saying that I had multiple guests. Then started to say he never asked for 20 euros when the second guest arrived and he also started to use swear words and for me to shut up and go to my room when I demanded the money back. I was shocked to have a receptionist speak to me like that. Clearly this person is very shady and if he is a staff member and not the owner, I would advise the managers or owners to find a replacement since I really don't think a hotel is a right place for this person and on the long term you're gonna ruin your reputation. I really would advice to stay away from this place since it was not a relaxing stay at all. I would say the only good things were the bed (which only one of them was ready 😁), but the room itself is a joke, there were no hangers and no chair by the desk. A change in staff or some training and a few basic things in the room would make this place really worth while since it seemed newly renovated and is in a convenient location. Though st Pauli is a bit trashy to begin with, but you should expect that.
