"Admittedly after having stayed in the delightful Hotel du Lac, Gardone Riviera the night before the Pian del Sole would have to work hard to match up but sadly it wasn't even trying. This was probably the perfect retreat in the 80s - you could see what once was - but no longer. Dated decor is one thing but drab, tired, damaged rooms and bathrooms is not acceptable. We were barely acknowledged when we arrived. Even though we had emailed requesting a table for dinner in their restaurant (an email which we now know why it was ignored) the first we knew they were closed for dinner was when we were handed our key with no eye contact and with a shrug told that the restaurant was closed but plenty of options in town. Not that any suggestions were given. Oh but we could use the pool! In fact there were very few places open. Only bars with snacks. We were saved by a restaurant deciding to open even though their website said they were closed. Breakfast was uninspiring but not a surprise by this point. The young chap who checked us out was cheerier but all too late. Overall impression is of a place that the owners no longer want to run, would like to sell, move on, retire but no-one wants to buy these places. It could be a fabulous boutique hotel in the hills but it needs a lot of work and money spent on it."

"We had a wonderful family holiday here; the apartment was spacious and immaculately clean, with comfortable beds and a simple but well equipped kitchen area. Our balcony was large with plenty of room to eat outdoors and a lovely view stretching up the hill and to the mountains beyond. The swimming pools are a real bonus; one is small but very relaxing- the other is a good size for families to swim and play in. Marieangela and Pierre Luigi go above and beyond to make you feel welcome, giving a really personal feel to your stay. The walk down to public beaches takes about quarter of an hour in one direction, slightly longer to the main one in central Pietra Ligure. It’s worth-while turning right uphill out of the apartments and finding the little steps down to the town rather than heading down the road way to the centre of town. Don’t be put off by the neglected looking government buildings down near the station; the rest of Pietra Ligure was a good base for a family holiday with plenty of places to eat, a good free beach and friendly people. Highly recommended!"

"This is a stunning hotel located on a hill overlooking Alassio and the Mediterranean. The building is beautiful and renovated to the highest standards. We got a wonderful room overlooking the sea. The service is immaculate. I highly recommend dinner at the in-house 1* Michelin restaurant. Unfortunately we could only stay one night but we will for sure return for a longer stay. Be aware that accessing the hotel by car is a challenge given the rather steep and narrow lanes up the hill."

Comfortable bed, bathroom with large shower. Excellent breakfast buffet, with everything from sweet to savory to satisfy every palate. Vincenzo, our host, is extremely kind, courteous, and friendly. He's always ready to accommodate any request and offer helpful directions and recommendations. I'll definitely be back!"
