Travelogue of Toshogu Shrine

Toshogu Shrine in Nikko is a shrine located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. It is the head shrine of Toshogu, and the main deity enshrined is Toshogu Daigongen (Tokugawa Ieyasu). Toshogu Shrine in Nikko, Kunozan Toshogu Shrine, and Senba Toshogu Shrine are collectively referred to as the 'Three Great Toshogu Shrines in Japan'. Toshogu Shrine in Nikko was established in the third year of Genna (1617) to commemorate Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Edo Shogunate. There are many animal wood carvings in the shrine, symbolizing peace, among which the 'Three Monkeys' and the 'Sleeping Cat' are the most famous. In December of the 11th year of Heisei (1999), the 'Shrines and Temples of Nikko' including Toshogu Shrine in Nikko were listed as World Cultural Heritage.
